Streaming video files from wi-fi home network

Hoping soon to be buying a Axim x50v and a few questions someone might be able to help me with.

I record tv directly onto my main pc using showshifter software which is set to record divx and uses about 500mb per hour at present settings.. I also have virtual dub for editing adverts out etc which can then re-save at any divx setting or other format so could reduce file sizes down for viewing on Axim..

but one of my uses I expect will be to be able to play video around the house away from my office area, so will it work ok to stream from the main pc via the wi-fi network? I am expecting that this will be alright as I can do that with my laptop ok.. just go to the video directory and launch any of my stored films on main pc and play in laptop.. at 11 Mbps that always works fine.. so basically that would mean that my whole libary of recorded films and tv will be available to the axim while at home and if away can just put a few reduced size media files on a memory card?

Sorry if that question is a bit basic but just trying to figure a few of these things out..

Following up to my on post.. I did more searching here and found some helpful stuff about using media encoder to enable watching a streaming live tv source on another pc, such as the axim.. I could not get that to work however as I think there is a problem with it relating to my tv card, a hauppage pci card..

For anyone interested I found a great workaround to that, which is that if I start a .wmv recording on showshifter (and I presume also any other live tv recording software) I can start watching that recording immediately on media player on another pc in the network.. which is effectively slightly time shifted and virtually live tv...

You can take a look at my encoding guides, I show various methods of encoding not to mention how to stream live TV over your wifi and the internet as for as that goes.

I should have mentioned that the helpful stuff I found was on your site.. thanks for that!

Unfortunately for me there is a problem with my hauppauge card which means that the encoder can see the card but refuses to find any video signal, so its no use thus far.. it is likely a wdm codec issue so may be able to resolve it in the end..

My workaround so far is great tho.. the streaming of the file as it is being recorded is amazing.. never knew it could do that before.. only works with wmv files but the quality is as good as that displayed on the live display on the main pc which showshifter is recording.. its quite handy too in that using showshifter, which is linked to my digiguide, I can set it to record any program and thus be able to watch that as it records on the media player on the laptop.. and later my axim.. if I dont want to keep the recording can just delete at the end of watching..

One shame about wmv is that microsoft dont want you messing with your own recorded files and so it cant later be converted to divx on virtualdub (altho googling can find some software to enable that in fact) Usually I record directly into divx and then edit adds etc out later on virtualdub..

Anyway, I will try and get the hauppauge card to work on the encoder which of course is the more direct approach.. its all good fun anyway.. :)

You may also want to give VirtualDub a look for Capturing, It does this well and records straight to divx this way you can take your recording and run it back through VirtualDub and edit out what you want without having to convert file types.

I have a hauppage pci card that is about 8 years old and I am able to stream video from the card using windows media encoder. You should check hauppage's site for an updated driver. I have used the card in three different pc's and have always gotten the lastest driver from there site when installing in a new pc.

Well I downloaded the latest wdm driver from them and re-installed it all following the instructions... managed to finally get the encoder to see the video and even stream it successfully! Only trouble is that it has now stopped working and after repeated re-installs of the wdm it is giving varied results from not working to almost working and usually ends up freezing the media encoder prog..

Must be something to do with my own pc I think.. some kind of instability.. I will look into and perservere and eventually sort it out now that I know for sure that it can work..
