Showing Subtitles and Fairuse problems

Last week I mentioned that I was getting great rips using Nero Recoder. This is fine for English language films but I can not get BetaPlayer to show subtitles in foreign films.

A few people mentioned that I should try FairUse, but I am having real problems with it. I keep getting an error message, whilst it builds the program Chain Link (analysing the DVD) It always stops and reports that it cannot read the file. I don't have this problem with any other program including DVDShrink or Nero.

Does anyone have any info that could sort this out or any technique that allows me to show the subtitles - preferably using Nero Recoder if possible. The quality is amazing when played back through BetaPlayer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks - Martin

Have you tried playing the DVD for a few minutes in a DVD player and then trying Fair Use?

You can't display Nero Digital subtitles in any player except Showtime, Recode uses a slightly strange method to store its subtitles (DVD subpictures in a private stream if you need the technical term). Using FairUse you can add permanent subtitles to the video which displays in any player, this is necessary because BetaPlayer does not have subtitle support.

If FairUse is having problems with your DVD then you can rip it first using DVD-Shrink, select "Full Disc Backup", set the Video Compression to "No Compression" and select "ISO Image File" as the backup target. DVD-Shrink will complain about the size of the resulting file but don't worry about that, now open the newly created ISO file in FairUse and continue as normal.
