video for beta player... square pixels vs non square....

hope the topic aint tooo cryptic... but im just wandering if there an adv over one or the other...

see i have some vids which are true 16:9

That is the file size is DV 720x576 (4:3)- but because it is meant to be viewed witha 16:9 1.77 pixel ratio - when viewed as square pixels it is squished...so i was wandering do u guys just resize it so it is square pixels so u would get 640/1.77 = 361 -

or do u keep the same aspect ratio and just change the pixel ratio on the dell.....IE 480*1.25 = 600*480

my main reason for asking is cos i cant tell the dif - others might... (i have my show reel stored on my dell so need BEST QUAL even if i cant see the dif) and if there is no dif - i might just resize to square pixels so i dont have to keep changin the pixel ratio depending on what i am watching/showing

First have a read of Jukka Aho's "Quick Guide" then ask yourself whether this is really something you want to deal with properly (bearing in mind his is a brief explanation). This should also explain that there are two different ratios to consider here, the image aspect ratio is not the same thing as the pixel aspect ratio, the IAR tells you the shape of the video, while the PAR tells you the shape of the pixel distribution or pixel grid within it.

Section 3 has a large conversion table that gives the correct conversion factors and to answer the other part of your question, yes, do the resizing before you transfer it to your Axim as that way you know the conversion is correct plus it will display correctly on a PC monitor.

had a look - but didnt find my answer.....

the key thing is...

for a picture which is 16:9 -
using square pixels the image size would be - 640x361
using 16:9 shaped pixels the image size would be - 600x480 or 720x576 what ever...

and i was just wandering which is better...

does this make sense?

Resize to square pixels because that's what your Axim has.

You probably mean your movies are NTSC widescreen anamorphic - 16:9 aspect ratio. You want letterboxed square-pixel versions for the X50v so the calculation would be:

640 / (16/9) = 360

The letterboxed size is then 640 x 360. Don't use non-square anamorphic conversion for Axim. Also, some encoders only use pixels sizes in multiples of 16 (e.g. Nero Recode2). In that case use 640 x 352 (squished a bit vertically but not really noticable).
