Arrow beta player review...

okay this is from my first 24 hours with b-player...

pluses
user frendly interface
LOTS of settings
bigger video window when in portrat mode
all the control of wmp + more
more button mapping ability

minuses

way too many error messages (ie there is not enugh buffer space to play this media)
refuses to play in the backround
no skins

over all

b-player is a good app if you are going to use your ppc as a shelf sterio becuse it does not play in the back round. it is still a good app though and i would recommend it...(just look in my sig)

I haven't seen any of the error messages you refer to. (Betaplayer .5 Stable). It does occasionally freeze when I tap the screen to pause, requiring a soft reset, but even this is pretty rare. I also have used it very little to play music, mostly videos.

It seems to play fine in the background as long as you minimize it instead of closing it.

I'm sure skins will be coming, although skins are WAY overrated IMO.

Skins? hah.. either I play video full screen or blank the screen when playing mp3s.

My gripe with betaplayer is that shuffle play is predictable. :(

Betaplayer is one step away from being a good music player. It needs to be able to better display track information and playlist on the main screen when playing. It's a GREAT video player that can play music also.

Until then, I'll keep using GSPlayer.

just tap the X in the upper right corner.

I install GSPlayer and quickly removed it. Not being able to open a directory of mp3s was more than I could bear.

What the heck ya talkin' about, son?? Sure you can! Just go to "File/Open File", then select your directory, create playlists, whatever. I have 14 directories of mp3's and do this daily with GSPlayer.

ValkyrieRider, can you provide more detail about how to create playlist in GSPlayer? Example, I have 100 mp3 files in a directory "top 100 2004" on a cf card. In GSPlayer 2.21, if I do File/Open File, and click on the directory "top 100 2004", I can see all the 100 files there. What do I do next to create a playlist?

Sorry for the delay in responding, ocharlies! I neglected to check back on this thread.

When you are on that same screen that shows the file directory, click the right-most icon in the lower GSPlayer taskbar that looks like keys. That way you can just tap on the songs you want to add to your playlist (each song stays highlighted). If by chance you wanted to select all of the songs, there's a key in the taskbar that does just that. After you've selected your songs, hit the OK button to go back to the GSPlayer main screen, and you'll see those songs listed. Then go down to "File/Save Playlist", and name it what you want. :approve:

ValkyrieRider, thanks.

After some frustration, I found out if I go to File/Find File, then I can choose the directory and all the files in it would be selected (over 50 files). If I go to File/Open File and select all the files there, nothing happens - it just returns to the main screen blank. If there are fewer like 20 files, then selecting File/Open Files and selecting all the files works fine.

I love betaplayer because it does a great job of playing music files over a network. I just purchased a microdrive so I plan on playing music in the car, in which case I do not believe I will be able to use betaplayer, I'll need something with a bit better interface.
