In Windows Media Player on your PC, go to Tools>Options>Copy Music, and down at the bottom is a slider to select quality vs quantity. If you have the Axim docked, hit the Devices tab, and you can select destination-specific quality settings. While you're there, highlight the CD player and make sure copy mode is digital.
I've copied a bunch of music using the lowest quality setting, and it's usually OK, but a bit rough sometimes ... sounding like a tinny, ringing distortion. Get some good earphones if you don't have already. I use the Sony Studio style, and they're excellent for $20.
