compressing AVI's from Digital Camera

I've got a canon Ixus 40 digital camera. It take decent video (30 frames per second, 640x480 VGA resolution) in MJPEG format - although still with the .avi extension.

The problem is it takes up so much room for such a short movie, it's really jerky, even with BetaPlayer.

So after searching, I found Bink and Smacker's RadVideoTool - which compressed the avi using DivX5.02 codec - the result - no noticable loss of quality, and file sizes one tenth of the original. These movies now play fantastically on the X50v, with Betaplayer.

I highly recommend this software, and it's free!

The only trouble with this is, you need a computer to do the compression. It seems there isn't a RadTools for the PPC.

When I'm travelling, I won't have a computer to use - so - Does anyone know of a compression utility that I can use on the X50v, so I can plug the SD card in and convert the avi file in DivX, and save it to the CF card?

You know this would be awesome if one exists, however I would seriously worry about the time it would take to compress a file using a 624MHz chip with a maximum of 32MB of spare ram. It takes a long time even on my laptop with 1GB of ram and a 1.5MHz Pentium M.

I suspect you might not get a utility to do this on the PocketPC but I'll keep an eye out and post if I see anything.

Cheers
Adrian

Give PQV by bitbank software a try for playing those mjpeg videos. Chances are you won't have to do any conversion for a smooth viewing experience. PQV has a full featured trial period.
