The files are not associated with any prog. And it can't see the files when I try to open them from within WMP.

Open WMP, Choose Menu->Update Library. Then look for your files. For whatever reason you need to update the library any time to add or remove files. Good Luck~

Yeah, I did just that, and the player can't see the mpg files. Yeah, I will just use beta player. But it kinda renders Microsoft's own player useless.

For what its worth, the latest versions of betaplay (both stable and unstable) alread have the 2700G optimizations, if you are going to get it you should get the .5 stable version as it is the most current version available.
