Whats the diffrence between .ogg and .mp3?

I hear so much about how .ogg is way smaller then .mp3, even with the same bitrate and stuff, but when I tryed it, they were the exact same size, so can someone tell me how this can be done??

They will be the same size (or near enough) at the same bitrate. But if you rip a song from CD to MP3 at 128Kb/s and a song from CD to OGG at 128Kb/s you MIGHT find that the OGG version sounds better.

Or that the 96Kb/s OGG sounds as good as a 128Kb/s MP3. The 96Kb/s OGG would be smaller of course.

Just remember that converting from one to the other is a bad idea. Just re-rip one of each and listen for yourself with a few different bitrates.

Also make sure when you are ripping the Ogg that you encode with variable bitrate. That's one of the areas that Ogg Vorbis files derive their strength.

Bitrate choice is dependent on many factors such as the encoder used, headphone/speaker setup, your hearing etc., essentially the only way to be sure is to try it for yourself. A good place to start is at Quality 5 then work your way up or down from there depending on what you consider acceptable.

Almost forgot, constant bitrate is only necessary for applications such as streaming audio where increases in the bitrate would cause the available bandwidth to be exceeded causing dropouts.
