I converted some cd's to mp3 then transferred them to my axim x50v. However, I have run into two problems:
1. I can't delete the files from my PDA. I get an error message that indicates some copy infringment and thus won't allow me to delete the file. I stored them on a cf card.
2. The music I transferred is quite distorted with static like sounds.
Any help with these problems will be a great help.
Only thing that I can think of the is the anti-piracy protection on the CD, some CD's don't allow you to rip the songs off the CD, or they mess up the audio when played back. You may just want to check if you can receive those songs some other way... that will not be spoken of in this forum...

It doesn't seem fare. I have to buy the same music twice? But I understand about what can't be mentioned here. I wonder though, are all converters equal? I just used a freeware version called DeepRipper. It is easy to use and seemed to do the job fine until I listened to the music.
Well, it's probably nothing wrong with the ripper, have you tried using Windows Media Player or maybe Winamp 5.0? (With Winamp, you may need the pro version...) It's all about preventing the spreading of music, I had a CD that didn't allow me to copy it, so I just waited one or two days, checked some torrent sites, voila! That's the bad thing, some people aren't interested in stealing music, they just use it for personal use, but everyone has to pay. You could try ripping the tracks again, just using different settings, don't know if that would work
I use free AudioGrabber, with the MT version of lame, sweet. 8 seconds a song to mp3. (MT, multi-threaded)
Never had a problem with 1000+ cd ripped. And they are all from my cd collection, paid for.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try them and I'll let you know how things go. It's interesting that the ipod web site assumes it is ok to copy CD's. Here is a quote from their web site:
"As for all of those CDs you already own, iTunes makes it easy to quickly transfer your favorite songs and albums. Just pop a CD into your Mac or PC and click the Import button. You can import music in a variety of formats, such as MP3 or AAC, and at whatever quality level you’d prefer." http://www.apple.com/ipod/

Thanks Howard2k for suggesting this program.
It IS ok to copy your own CDs to digital media format. Nothing that interesting about it :) How else would you get them on your iPod?
It's not suggesting that you upload them to Kazaa. Big difference.

Yeah, big difference, although KaZaA doesn't seem to be the popular thing still, is it? All that P2P programs stuff, well with exception of BT, is horrible. You can't get much done, especially with spyware and stuff. Anyways, if being for personal use, there is nothing wrong with ripping CD's which is why Microsoft can do it using WMP 10.
I downloaded ITunes (through dialup--ouch) only to learn that the progarm is not available for win 98. So I then downloaded the latest Windows Media Player (Version 9) I wanted version 10 but it does not appear it is available for win 98 either. I have been able to convert files, but I continue to hear static at the begining of the songs. I listened to them through my computer speakers and heard the static there too so I know it isn't the axim -- thank goodness! I have also tryed about six different converters so it must have something to do with my seven year old computer. When I play cd's through my computer's CD drive, thus no conversion, the static is not present.
