Did you have any problems playing the transfered show in WMP10 on your desktop? Might be a codec issue. Also what operating system are you using? If possible I would also test this out with a smaller sample. Record something for like 10-15 minutes and use that. It will cut down on the wait time while you are testing.

I agree Tivo did a crappy job on this whole Tivo-to-go deal. I have had several problems with choppy video on our TV after the update. But they seemed to fix it last week with the newer 7.xB version. At best the entire service seems to be peiced together. Good Luck~

Thx Adam.. I'm using XP SR2 - and the file plays just fine on the PC.

I really wish Tivo could have got this one right... I mean - I understand Tivo had to deal with copyright issues, etc.. but - perhaps they could have just required your tivo code when first transferring to the desktop and then from there.. just allow you to convert the files and watch/transfer on any player/machine..

Oh well.. I'm going to try using a different method and see if it works. I'll let you know..

Well, I'm having issues. My PC does not have a DVD player, so no codecs. I downloaded and installed the NVIDIA ones listed on Tivo's site, but these are 30 day trial. I also try the sync option but it errs out after about a second whether I go to Axim or CF card in reader. Here is the text:
Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error. This can occur when another program or operating system component encounters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to the Player.
Helpfull!
Any ideas?

OK, so I did another test file. This time it was a 1:50 movie recorded at High quality. Transfer time form the Tivo to my desktop was 1:10 for a 2.97GB file. Played fine in WMP10. I then synced it with the Axim. Total conversion time was 35 min and took the file from a 2.97BG .tivo file to a 463MB .wmv. I synced with a card reader to my SD card and that took less then 5 min. Tested it out and it played fine in WMP on the Axim.

I have no idea what to tell you as far as why you might be having problems. I never had to download any codecs for WMP. Only some xvid ones for my use with FairUse. But I did find a great little program that tells you what codecs your computer is looking for when you try an play files. It is called GSpot. I don't know if it will help, but you can give it a try. The only other option I can think is to check around the Tivo Community boards. They usually have some good advice with problems like this.

Good Luck~

Hi all.. just wanted to let you know that I still cannot get this to work directly with WMP10.. I'm going to download that util and see what it tells me... perhaps I am missing a critical component that WMP is too silly to tell me.. I mean.. what does "throw and exception" mean anyway.. and why not tell you how to correct it? Oh well.

In any event.. I was able to get the file to my Axim using alt means.. the 1.6GB 1 hour show was converted to a 180MB file and playable on the axim.. the results aren't stellar in quality.. but not bad.

More results to follow...

Tivo Files Choppy

The files using TIVO converted fine and will run, but they are very choppy. Maybe 10fps or so. Is this because I am using a 'normal' sd card and not an Ultra 2? Would that speed up the playback?

Thanks.

The card will have nothing to do with it. What PPC do you use?

Hmm.. no issues with FPS here. I transferred a 2 hour CSI episoide which when done converting became a 320 MB MPG file (3.6GB tivo). While the show occasionally does appear a bit pixelated in landscape mode, for the most part it is gorgeous and plays very smoothly with very little hesitation. I'm running it on a Viking 1GB CF card..

So.. something else may be going on.. like Fly said.. perhaps it is the machine? let us know and we'll try to help!

I am using an X50v. The FPS is definitely slow. Too choppy to enjoy. Should I allocate more program memory? The SD card is a generic PNY card.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, that could have something to do with it. If you have to much stuff installed in Main Memory that will slow things down quite a bit. Same can be said if you do not take care of your temp internet files on a regular basis. Also, I assume you have the processer set to "auto" right? I would do some "spring cleaning" and see how it runs then. Also, a soft reset will clear out the cobwebs some too. You didn't post what your memory allocation is so I can't really comment other then what I have alread said.

I have also done a few more shows. Working fine here. They don't look near as good at when I do a DVD with FairUse. But for a TV show, recorded at a lower quality. It works. Good Luck~

I forgot to mention I also found out if you "convert" and sync a move/show, then delete it form your Axim. If you go and sync it again it skips the "conversion" and just copies to the Axim. If you are using a card reader this is very fast. I just moved a 30 min show that was previously converted in about 8 seconds. Sweet!

After a second try it finally worked. I had to install an updated codec. After that I brought over a Tivo taped show onto my pc then using WMP 10 I synced it to my CF card in my card reader. I did the process at night so I don't have any times to report. I also made sure I had the latest Tivo Desktop version and checked for any updates to WMP 10.

As far as space needed I started out with a 23 minute show which was 1019mb (as stated by Tivo Desktop). After conversion it was 105mb on my card. This equates to 4.56mb per minute show on my test.

One question I have is I never saw where to specify how big or little I would like the coversion to be.

FlyACL are you still checking this thread?

Also I did buy Power DVD. What a great program, if anyone is looking for a way to transfer DVD's I highly reccomend it.

There is not a whole lot of control. By default it is AUTO and I don't know what settings it uses there. You can change it by clicking the porperties and settings button (red check mark in upper right) and choose the quality tab. Form there you can move the slide bar on the bottom form 21MB per hour for smallest size to 214MB per hour for best quality. Keep in mind you can also change the recording quality on the tivo and make the .tivo files smaller to start with. We keep ours on good so we have more recording space. Plus we can't really tell that big of a difference with our set up.
