I don't remember having that many problems on the X5 when playing video except with the frame skipping. If you are willing to spend $275 for the x30H (which in my opinion is a really good device) why don't you fork over a little more money for the x50v that is refurbished. Go to the "Hot Deals" section of this site and people have gotten great deals on x50's that are refubished just like the x30H.

Get the Dell 312MHZ w/Wifi+BT. Its enough for your movie playing. I currently use that one and have my processor speed set for 208MHZ with NO lag whatsoever when i'm watching videos (i do that alot for my 2hr commute everyday). The picture and sound quality is great.

If your in the USA, wait for a better deal instead of getting a Refurb unit :) If your the type to wanna carry a # of movies then I suggest you start saving up your money and buy a 2gb sd card. Currently on Dell for $133.49

I pretty much settled on the X30 624MHz, i had a good night at work tonight and put some extra cash in my pocket. Unless i can find an x50v for under $300 then im going with the X30 624MHz because i really cant justify spending over $300 bucks on a PDA. As it is the $250 for thr X30 is tough to justify. Ill look around a little more and check those dell refurbs for a bit longer before i make any purchases.

Would the X30 624MHz really be bad for video?

Like we've said countless times. ALL Dell Axims play video PERFECTLY FINE. It all comes down to encoding the videos correctly.

Ok, so how do you encode correctly?

Thanks,

There are guides all over this site. I just make sure it's at the proper resolution and not a high bitrate and it plays fine. I have a tv tuner on my PC and when I record shows, they are recorded in the correct format, so I can just transfer the shows to my PPC without a hitch.

Why would the x30H be bad for video??? I dunno why anyone would be telling you such a lie! As many members have stated, make sure your encoding correctly and you shouldnt have a problem.

So far in my 2 months of having the x30Mid, I've encoded over 150 episodes of Animes. In addition, I've ripped over 20 movies from my DVD collection and encoded it for PPC. Never EVER had a problem with playback on PPC and thats with my processor speed set to Power Save at 208MHZ. If I can do this on a x30M then no reason why a x30Hi would have a poorer quality.

Spending on the extended battery is a good idea. Especially since you mentioned you wanted to use wifi. We all know the Axim's are so reputed for its "great" battery life. (If you didnt catch the drift I was being sarcastic here)

Anyway, the extra $50 is not too heavy a price to pay for that extra processor speed so if you want that processor speed go for it. BUT if your only watching videos and doing some basic PIM then I dont really see that much of a need for the x30H. I would rather think you wanna save that money to get a bigger storage card or accessories.

Also the new axim's u buy from Dell directly all come with 1 year warranty so that should not be a factor you need to consider when deciding which Axim you want. Again if your in the USA, check back often to see if a new axim deal is posted in our discount forum. Alot of members will usually post about the good deal when they see them on Dell site.

What I don't understand is how some people are able to encode DVDs at LESS THAN 300MB and still keep a 320x240 resolution with good sound. It's like...IMPOSSIBLE for me...-_-

Is that a joke? Is it even possible to create DVDs down to around 300MB and still look good?

Ive seen full movies that look almost DVD at 592 x 320 snd 576 x 304 that are around 650MB-700MB so it may be possible, especially on a 3.5" screen at 320x240.

You definitely lose some quality when your encode about 700MB vs 300MB. It all comes down to how sensitive you are to that sort of things.

I've seen movies that are 2Hrs in length encoded at 700MB and the same movie encoded again at 1.3GB. Seriously I cant notice the difference, but some ppl will jump and say the 1.3GB file is SO much better.
