AVI File Narrow on Axim... help!

Hi.. sorry for the newb questions but here goes:

1) I used Fair Use Wizard to rip my TROY DVD to a 700 MB avi file using the xVid option. When I view it on my 50v via betaplayer... the video isn't showing up fullscreen in landscape mode. It appears to be 640.. but maybe only 230 in height? Did I do something wrong in Fair Use Wizard? If I remember right.. there wasn't an option for 640x480.. only some other strange 640xXXX .. most likely this is my problem. Any way to get it to 640x480.. even for widescreen videos using the wizard?

2) I clicked the option to include subtitles... however, I guess this literally lays the subtitles over the video with no way to turn it off. Is there anyway to include subtitles with the avi file but use software to turn it on/off like you can with PC software?

3) 700 MB is a big file.. any recomendations on a good number you can go down to without sacrificing too much in the way of quality? Should I forego the 128Mhz stereo to 96 or so?

Thx so much for your help.. this website is perfect!

Yeah, good questions.

1) Sounds like the resolution is the problem, is the DVD widescreen? If so, you might have to force the size of the video to go 4:3 rather than 16:4, but that does small distortion of the video.

2) Yeah, I don't know how FairUse does it, but Pocket DivX Encoder allows you to add the subtitle file, which I think will allow you to choose the subtitle file "On" or "Off" depending on what you want, might want to try that.

3) Just bring the audio down, it'll save you some space, usually a 450MB-500MB will be just fine for video, plus bring the audio down to 96kbps, you may even want to put it to MONO unless you are going to listen to the file with headphones or a speaker set up. I sometimes will hook up powered speakers, but if I'm just going to take the file to go, the Axim only plays MONO audio anyway.

Thanks Gokuu.. I thought I might have blown the resolution when I ripped it.. didn't catch that via the software. Things went real well otherwise!

I'll check out Divx Encoder.. doesn't look like betaplayer allows you to turn it on/off anyway so maybe we'll just leave it off for now.

I'll turn down the audio next time... would love to get it down to about 350 or so to get 2 DVD's and a couple TV shows on a 1GB SD card!

Txh for the info!

Yeah, now that I think about it, I was getting the turning off of subtitles confused with different audio streams. I have some files that have two different audio streams (One, English and the other, Japanese) and I think you can change between the two in Betaplayer.

Yeah, you can certainly get it to 350MB, it depends if you are a guy who needs good quality or not.

1. WS movies will show widescreen unless you change the settings. The newest version of FairUse has a 4/3 option that will crop the video to fill the screen. You can look HERE at post #20 for some screen shots I took of what it will look like.

2. When you choose subtitles in fair use you also have to check the box that says "Show Forced Subtitles Only". This way you will only get the ones that were ment to be in the movie. Say if two guys are speaking german for a couple of minutes it will show them as they were ment to be in the movie.

3. 700MB is way to big in my opinion. It will look great, but do you really need that kind of quality for viewing on your Axim. I use a rule of thumb of 100MB per 30 minutes of video and change the audio to 96. Everything still looks and sounds great and I can fit 2-3 movies on my 1GB card. So a two hour movie will be around 400MB. By lowering the audio to 96 this leaves more of your "400MB" for video and helps it look a little better.

If you have not seen it there is a great walkthrough HERE. It was made before the 4/3 thing was an option, but you can check they out on your own. Good Luck~

I'm not really big on using FairUse, I've used it once or twice, but I'd like to try it again, hey FlyACL how long does it take you to rip a DVD and what are your computer specs?

Thanks for info

It takes about an hour or so for a two hour movie with my computer. By far I have found FairUse to be the best option to convert movies for the Axim. There are other options, but this is easy and works well. My desktop is a Dimension 8400 3.2GHZ with 1GB of RAM.

Thx Adam.. I'll check out that 4/3 option.. I guess you lose a lot of the movie that way though??

I like the widescreen.. I just wish the height of the picture filled the screen like the width does.. am I just confused?

Great description of the subtitles... I'll do that next time.

But is it true that you can't include all subtitles in the avi and then just turn them on/off via betaplayer? It's either an all or nothing situation?

Thx again..

I was looking for an option in Betaplayer and it didn't mention any subtitle options, it only mentioned the audio options and the chance to change the streams of audio, that's all

If you choose subtitles when you encode the movie with fairuse then they are a part of the movie file and can not be "turned on, or off" in betaplayer. If you normally watch movies in english then you want to check the box that says include subtitles and the one that says show only forced subtitles. Then you are done.
