Newbie needs help with Beta Player

I just installed Beta Player to my SD card. When I tried to play an avi file (recorded by my digital camera) it was choppy and skipped (for lack of a better term). I played the same file through media player on my laptop and it was smooth. What have I done wrong?

Side note: I installed it to my SD card, but I'm not 100% sure that's where I want it, as I only have one and have no CF card (yet). I'm completely paranoid to put anything in BIS. (What if I screw something up!!??) Can someone ease my fears?

Thanks,

Amy

BIS isn't easy to screw up. Main memory usually won't store moview, and i think your built in storage hasd around 90 megs. you should make sure that your ppc is set to maximum speed (624). Everything runs fine for me on betaplayer.... Hmmmm, do you have the latest stable version?

Did you try moving the Betaplayer to the main memory to see if that increases the movie playback quality? I have never tried to run Betaplayer from an SD card, but I have always had great success with it from the main memory.

Anyone else able to get Betaplayer to run fine from SD?

New thought

Do I need to do something to the file first before I copy it to my SD card to play in the Axim? Does it matter that the avi file and Beta Player are on the same card?

*sigh* So much to learn.

I would try that. Install it to Main Memory or BIS. I have had mine in BIS form day one and have never had a problem playing anything. Good Luck~

Okay, I uninstalled and reinstalled to BIS

I tried playing another avi file (again recorded from my digital camera) and had the same problem. It plays MP3s great though.

That is rather strange, could you please run the AVI file through this and paste the output to this thread.
Please ensure that the Get Average Video Bitrate in the Actions->Options sub-menu is turned on.

I did as you requested

and got an error message: unsupported video format: MJPG!

I clicked okay and then this result came up:

Not really. That's just a format that betaplayer doesn't support. There is no universal video player for Pocket PC's. Try PQV from bitbank software for your camera's movies.

I have BetaPlayer installed on SD card and everything runs fine. I had also two movies on the same card compressed to 350MB each. At that time due to some error I had also only 6MB of free RAM, but everything run without any probems.

I got it to work!!!

I really don't know how. LOL. I messed with some settings and doubled the normal buffer size from 2400 to 4800KB. At this point, I really don't care how I did it. I'm just glad I did it.

Thanks for all the help.

Betaplayer definitely supports MJPEG, the problem is that it's not an appropriate format for playback on a PDA due to the very high video bitrate. The error reported by kissableamyf is quite normal as the tool I linked to is for checking compatibility with Sigma Design based DVD players, not Betaplayer, it just happens to be a small tool that produces easy to read results.

kissableamyf: You can easily compress this file down to 1/20 of its original size using a DivX/XVID/Windows Media/MPEG4 compressor with no visible quality loss, the reason for this is MJPEG is a very good format for capturing video but not so good for playback on a Pocket PC. If you want an extremely easy to use tool, then you could try the new DivX Converter which is available at DivX.com or the free Windows Media Encoder from Microsoft.

I should have known that. bitbank himself gave picard_beta tips when he wanted to add camera movie files to the growing collection of formats betaplayer supports.
