Question Freeware Video Encoding

Recently, I've seen a lot of discussion about the "best" way to encode videos for your Axim. I am looking for a system of doing it that meets the following requirements
  • Can Convert Commercial DVDs
  • Can Convert Existing Movie Files (.avi & .mpg)
  • Can Convert Existing movie files w/ divx/xviD encoding
  • Can convert to 640x480 (for my Axim x50V!!!)
  • and is preferably free!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should be using/statements about the quality of video that is outputted? Primarily I am interested in good quality/small footprint, encoding time is not a huge deal to me, but I also don't want it to be ridiculous either.

So far I have heard of using Dvd Decrypter, and then using AutoGordian Knot. I have also heard of Fair Use. How is the quality of these programs?

Thanks for your input in advance!

I've been using Gordian Knot since like 2001. I have never tried any other coding software. Older versions were a bit tricky to use, but as next versions developed it seemed to be more friendly. Recent AutoGK is a fine application and shall suit well.

You can try FairUse. It is free and I think it will do all of things you want.

I'm using these have have excellent quality at 450 MB per DVD. Some longer movies (ie Star Wars) I run at 700 MB just because. If you haven't already, check out the sticky guide in this forum...

Also, check out this tutorial. It uses DVD Shrink and PocketDiviXEncoder. Both of them are free. You can play the final output on Betaplayer, which is again free.

450-700 mb is too big a footprint for me. Anyone had any success with a smaller size file, but still with good quality? I have two 512 MB SD cards...ideally I'd like to fit 2 movies on each...though i don't know if that is a realistic goal. Let me know...

About 100mb per 30 mins is a good guide, i'm still experimenting but it seems good.

I vote for FairUse if you want free (and Pocket DVD Studio if you don't) but if you want options, this guide uses all freeware.
http://www.pocketmatrix.com/guides/dvd2divx/

I used it to get The Matrix under 260MB with no stutter and no pixelation.
Perfectly synched as well.

The section about using HeadAC3he can usually be skiped because most modern DVDs rip straight to WAV and don't need audio processing.

I used to use it exclusively but Pocket DVD Studio is quicker.

Sale them and get a honking CF card. 4 GB = 8-9 movies at 400+ mb a piece!!

I don't have time to test one at anything smaller than 400 because I'm just so satisfied with that size and it's about 4 hours a pop I don't want to waste. Give it a go and see for yourself, then you can let us know. :approve:

I used DVD Decrypter and Autogordian Knot and the results were good, but it took a l-o-n-g time to encode a 100 minute movie into a 475 mb XVID file. I'm looking for a simpler, quicker method.

This process takes about 3 hours for a 2 hour movie
http://www.pocketmatrix.com/guides/dvd2divx/

That was for a QVGA DivX file.
I've never tried it with VGA but I would guess the same or even quicker since the compression would be the same or less.
