Encoding AVI for PPC with Mac?

I have been using an older XP machine with my PPC and I don't have a DVD/ROM for it.
I would like to have some of my DVD's on my PPC for traveling. Is is possible to do that with a Powerbook?
Also which is the best format AVI or Divx or something else?
I have used this board many times and am looking forward to all replys!!!

Hi drj,

You bet. HandBrake:

http://handbrake.m0k.org/

i don't think Divx is a format, I think it's a codec (unless I'm confused). I just go with the defaults in HandBrake (except for setting the file size I want it to output).

Have fun.

Marcomillions,
I have downloaded and am using handbrake. While "ripping" the DVD it states that it will take 24-27 hours!! Is that normal or have I messed something up?
Thanks for the quick reply.

Yikes, Jeff! I've never seen that. I think you should expect it to take 3-5 hours to do a feature-length movie from ripping to encoding, and maybe even a little longer than that, but not a whole day! You must have asked it for some immense resolution. Remember, unless you've got a VGA PPC, you need a screen size of 320x240. I also find HandBrake does just fine with a single pass.

Now I remember what it is you're never to do unless you want it to take a day or so to finish: don't select "h.264." Never, never.

Hope this solves it. I think it's a great program, even though I can only use about half of its features since I'm still running OS X.2.8.

Adjusted the settings and I had it on the h.264; so that's the reason.
I used a file size of 250MEG and the video quality is not that good am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for all your help.

Hi Jeff,

I thought it might be the h264.

I usually aim at 230 mb for my QVGA device, and the quality's generally good. (Dark scenes, action scenes can get a little "grainy.") You never mentioned what machine you've got. If you've got a VGA PPC, you'll need a larger file.

Maybe you should do 2-pass?

Hope this helps.

Marc

I have a axim v50x. I am trying a 500meg file. When I get home I'll try it. If that's not it I will use the 2-pass.
Marc thanks for all your help!!!!
