Type of Video

I know some of you use AVI, DIVx, WMV, and maybe other types...

What is exactly the best one though?
Surely there is a best file format, non of them could be the same.

A DVX encoded AVI using FairUse would be the best, IMO.

It's all in the eye of the beholder. ;)

I mean there are so many vatiables to take into acccount. For instance I have well over 20GB available for use on my X50v so I like 700MB xvid videos created by fairuse wizard lite. With Betaplayer as the player.

lol how much can I compress it, so that it still runs like a dvd movie, but I can fit a couple on a 1gb SD card?

20GB? How is that divided between memory cards, Don't Panic!?

A nice rule of thumb for movies is about 100MB per 30 min of video. Once you do a couple you get a feel for what you think looks good. You can also lower the sound quality a little and not really notice. This will save some more space for the movie.

A 6 and a 4GB Cf Microdrive and 4 5GB PCMCIA hardrives then if you add the 2 1GB SD cards that would be 32GBs know that I add it up.

My 2GB PCMCIA card died early so I don't count that, and I really need to look for my 1GB IBM microdrive... Then there's that CF Card that came with the camera... The 512MB card I gave to my cousin with my X30/High...

What was the question again?

Question

On the same thought as the originally poster, what do people find to be the best video/audio bitrate settings to get good video quality? I've tried many different DVD rippers now - DVD2PPC, Pocket DVD Wizard, Pocket DVD Studio, PocketDVD, etc., trying to zero in on what produces the best quality with the least amount of work. I really don't care too much about the price - I understand that I could sit down and puzzle out how to convert these using the free software, but that would take me far more time than it would take me to make $15-30. All about opportunity costs.

So assuming some standards - in my case, a Dell Axim X50v with 1GB of SD memory in the U.S. - what should I be setting these different programs for in terms of FPS? Bitrate? etc. I've read a lot of threads here, and while understand that increase bitrate should yield increased quality and increased size, I really don't understand what standards I'm working with on the various variables. Is 15fps a standard for the PPC (seems low - didn't I read somewhere that a standard DVD plays at 29.74fps or such?)

FairUse is free and has great results. Check the links in my sig for the program and the walkthrough. You can also do a search as it is used by many of us around here.

Here's my question.

Which will give you better quality?

Divx video (vbr-bitrate based): 320kbps audio: 80kbps mp3 2 pass

WMV video (vbr-bitrate based): 352kbps audio: 48kbps wma 2 pass

All else being equal.

I'm getting some excellent results using window media encoder with those wmv settings, but it takes forever to do a movie.

Seem like the avi's are faster (testing pocket dvd studio), but I'd like to get very similar quality in the same filesize.

Dvix or Xvid all the way. WMV would be last on my list.

All of my videos for my PPC (Totalling just over 1GB) are compressed at low bitrates of DivX/XviD. Not one single video I have is in WMV. I don't like Micro$oft deadlocked formats.

So are you using DivX/XviD just because you don't like microsoft or because it actually is better?

I've made the switch, it's official I can backup a movie much faster with XviD (using pocket DVD studio) with good quality results.
