Fair Use question

Hi, I just downloaded and installed Fair Use. I am following the guide by BigD. I am at the last step before encoding, where you select the file size, resolution, etc. At the top, I only have an option to choose XviD. DIVX is greyed out and I can't seem how to be able to select it. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Or did I not install something on my PC first?

Thanks!
Aaron

You need the divx codec on your PC. fairuse only installs the xvid one. I got mine from www.wmplugins.com

Ok, 1 more question/problem. I've tried twice (first time I thought was a fluke, so I tried again and the same thing).

I am putting the final file size to 300 megs, but the final file seems to actually come out to 773 megs each time. The only thing I don't have exactly the same in my software (versus the tutorial) is that I have 2 passes on the DIVX, where the tutorial seems to only have 1 pass. I can't figure out how to get rid of the second pass.

Any clues on this one?

What version are you using? v1.2 made some 350MB xvid files for me with 2-pass.

I used that size for one hour shows but the length of the film shouldn't make a difference.

Yep, 1.2LE also. Let me see if I can't get some screenshots up this morning. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Here are some screenshots. If anyone can see what I'm doing wrong, I'd appreciate it!

I think the key here is "LE" which means light edition. I thought that the LE version only allows you to make 700 MB movies.

Ohh, I thought it was make "up to" 700 megs.

Well, its cheap enough. I'll just have to pony up for the full version.

You know.....I just check the tutorial and he's using the Lite version, too. Hmm..........

I'm stumped. I guess if I can't get this to work I'll have to try one of the other commercial programs.

Does the second pass actually process or does it stop at one pass?
I've seen programs that made a big file on the first pass and then it shrunk a lot more on the second pass.
And on some programs the second pass had to be started manually.

I can't see what's wrong with your settings, I use Fair Use ( still figuring it out) and your settings are lower than mine I generally try to keey to as near to screen size as poss (600ish x 400ish for widescreen movies) and 96kbps for the MP3 sound and I have 2 pass Xvids that come in near target size give or take a couple od meg. I usually allow about 100mb per 30mins.

I usually set the sound quality, picture size then the file size and that seems to work, sometimes you have to adjust the picture size to keep the file size down, I have to do that with a couple of episodes of Frasier.

Hope my limited experiences help, best of luck. :approve:

If you do go for commercial Pocket DVD Studio is not very good.

In Fair Use I use two pass and it all starts automatically, once it starts encoding I leave it to it and tick the switch computer off box - I usually leave the encoding running overnight as it takes a while - but the results are good.

You are correct it is up to 700MB not Only 700MB. I can't see anything wrong with your fairuse settings either except maybe the file size is still blue like you hadn't really selected it yet. I think you need to click off that somewhere before you begin the processing or it goes back to whatever you used in your last session or the default 700MB if you haven't used it before.

Well, I got it to do the right file size when I used the XVID option. I can't seem to transfer over the 300meg file using File Explorer/ActiveSync, so I can't test it, but I'm hopeful.

Looks like I need to go find a USB card reader.
