Yea, 8.5 is not on the CD because 8.5 is part of SP3 which you can't download. You need to perform a hard reset.
Do not install any patches from other websites. Only install Dell patches and upgrades.

WMP8.0 vs 8.5
I made the same mistake in the supposed "update". I REALLY want to avoid a hard reset. Anyone know if a version 9.0 might be coming on the heels of the desktop version of WMP9.0 that Microsoft recently released? I might just wait for that upgrade.

Similar problem here...
This is what I learned. The original Media Player is still on the system - it is stored on ROM (therefore cannot be overwritten) and may be located in the Windows sub-folder. (Look for Player.exe) When you installed verison 7.1 is created a new folder Media Player folder under Program Files and this is where the media Player shortcut on the Start menu now points. Just need to point the shortcut to the 8.5 version located in the Windows sub-folder and delete the Media Player folder under Program Files. All is now working here.

I also loaded 2002 pocket pc windows media player and received same msg. ' No skins found. '
Go to home selection click on windows media player it pulls the windows media skin's back in. It is a temporory fix.

Ok I deleted the WM player folder and it's contents and I also found the original player.exe under the windows subfolder and it works! Now how do I link the Windows Media player shortcut from the desktop to \\windows\player.exe? Thanks.

Thanks Harley
I too had the "no skins" error. After reading Harleys post , I deleted the old player and made a link to the new one. Turns out it's a minor annoyance that does not require a "hard reset".
