Question Car Sound Input Question

I just got my GPS receiver for my Axim x50V. It does voice directions, which I am really excited about, but I also really love listening to mp3's in the car with my iPod. My head unit in my car has an 1/8" input jack, which is how I listen to my mp3's. I fear that the sound from that will overpower the sound of the voice directions from my x50v. So my question is, can I connect a splitter to the input jack on my head unit, and plug one connection to the iPod and the other to my x50v? Will it automatically superimpose the voice directions over my music? Any input from audiophiles out there would be really helpful. I am clueless when it comes to inputs/outputs.

Thanks,
ek778

I don't really know what would happen if you use a "splitter". I think you mean a simple device which has two inputs and leads the 2 entry signals to the same ouput, so you mean the opposit of a splitter, some kind of "joiner". My meaning is that it won't work because you'd need a more advanced "joiner" which mixes electronically both signals. Else sound quality will be bad.
But i am not sure of what i am talking about. But do you seriously need to turn the volume of your iPod so high? I mean when you use a GPS device you are concentrating on an unknow way, and have to listen carefully to the device. Loud music would disurb ;-)
AN alternative would be to buy a bluetooth speaker from Logitech which you can put into your 12V jack in your car. So you could send the voice generated by your GPS software through a bluetooth connection to the speaker. This speaker should have enough power for you to hear whats going on, even when listening to music. So if anybody uses such an bluetooth device, could you tell us if it would be loud enough?

Excuse me if i didn't understand your problem correctly and if i have only spammed this thread!

you can use a splitter with no problem.

the power output on the earphone connection is negligable in comparison to the input required to overload it.

ok, i have one question:

you want to stick the splitter into the input jack of your head device, is that right? isn't a splitter normally used to stick into a output jack? if so, will it let the audio signal pass through it in the wrong direction?

I don't think that matters as the "splitter" just physically joins two seperate devices to one jack. I don't believe it has anyway of interpreting the direction of the data passing through it.

Have you tried just connecting your X50v and running an MP3 player in the backround? I ditched my iPod mini for the X50v w/4GB Microdrive. I would think that with this setup you the GPS software would automatically override the MP3 software when necessary. That's what SPB time does when an alarm goes off for me.
