Is there a faster way to encode video using VirtualDub?
I've been following the readme/faq at the top of the fourm but I fine it take a while to re-encode video. I was wondering if anyone has found a faster way to do it? Different program? Different settings in VirtualDub?

It takes me about 30 minutes to re-encode a 75MB Video (in AVI format). I follow exactly what it says in the readme/faq at the top of the Multimedia fourm.

I dont know about faster but i found an easier way with that same program. I found a plug in for Smart resizer it basically lets you define one size ex. width/height and then calulates the rest of the settings for sizing the movies. If ya set the width to 320 i believe it is fits perfectly with the AX. However I have been finding if you use the rotate filter at the same time it causes it to encode wrong. So I use the MVP player that has a feature to rotate within the program.

just a word on the smart resizer - it appears that its sole function is to resize the video. However, we must bear in mind that the re-encoding gudie enables one to do more than resizing. More importantly, IMHO, the settings are designed to reduce the size of the video so that a movie can fit onto a reasonably sized SD or CF card.

30 minutes for a 75Mb file is kinda long, I agree. Besides the settings, you should consider the machine you're working on(and its settings). It took me 1 hour for a 530Mb file to re-encode.

just to let people know it was taking me about 2 hours to transfer a full dvd movie to divx and a further 1-2 hours to compress it for the axim.

I now have black hawk down in stero sound at 193mb and a the complete 1st series of "the office" (a uk comedy) on a 64mb SD card

Watching movies on my axim is by far the coolest thing ever

yes, encoding and re-encoding video is a very cpu intensive business. That's why most people, myself included, would carry out the whole process overnight.

As regards the size of video, you may wish to see my post on this issue:

BTW, how can you fit 6 episodes of "the Office" onto a 64MB SD card??

You're right about it being CPU intensive! I was encoding on my P3-800 and I switched to my Athlon XP 2000+ and boy is it faster.

30min 75MB AVI Conversion:

P3-800: 35min total for conversion

Athlon XP 2000+: 11min total for conversion

As you can guess I ain't using the P3-800 for video encoding anymore.

I have a Celeron 600 MHz and it takes me about 2 hours to encode a divx file of 700 MB for the Axim

I also use VirtualDub and the guide that I found at pocketmatrix. So the sound is mono, 22050 Hz

One odd thing is that the first movies I resized (and rotated) were only about 100 MB. Now I can't get below 170 MB. Also I find exactly one corrupted frame in every movie I try to resize. This also seems unnatural to me.

The best way of saving time is using Job Control and perform the conversions overnight.

Also I recommend, when you want to transfer the movie to your card, a card reader. This saves me an awful lot of time. It once took me 45 minutes to transfer a 125 MB video. With the card reader it took about 4 minutes.
