Question Legal Protected WMA Audiobook Troubles

Hi Everyone,

I live in Houston, and the public library here allows members to download Audiobooks from Netlibrary in protected WMA format. These can be played from a computer for a certain number of days or transfered to a handheld device from Windows Media Player. I followed Netlibrary's instructions for transfering the file to the storage card on my Axim X30 from Media Player 10, but every time I try to play the file I get the error message, "The licence for this file is not valid. Use Windows Media Player on your PC to copy the file to your device again."

I tried deleting and resyncing the file several times, but nothing works. The file opens fine from my laptop, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tracy Jo

In case it might help, here are the instructions from Netlibrary's website about how to transfer the audiobook (I followed them exactly):

"Q: How do I transfer an audiobook to my portable device using Windows Media Player version 10?

A:
1. Find your CD Quality downloaded audiobook file and double click it to open it with Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player opens and will obtain the license from NetLibrary to allow the audiobook file to play.
2 You may stop playback at this point if you choose. Click the 'Library' tab. The media Library will be displayed.
Find your audiobook in the Library Playlist pane, or sort your list by selecting the 'Now Playing' selection.
3. Drag the audiobook title from the Contents or Details panes in your library to the List pane to add it to the list of items to be synchronized, ensure that your portable device is connected and click the 'Start Sync' button in the List pane. Windows Media Player will transfer the file to your portable device.
4 When the transfer is complete, the status field will indicate 'Complete'. You many now disconnect your portable device and enjoy your NetLibrary Audiobook.
(*Some MP3 players will need to use the Safely Remove Hardware icon (on the taskbar) before removing the USB cable or an error will occur.) "

I use NetLibrary for Audio Books all the time and have no trouble syncing to my X50V. I bring up WMP 10 on my desktop computer, put my X50V in its cradle and click on sync. It locates the device in the right pane and I select my CF card. Then I go to Edit Playlist on the WMP 10 bar and select the book I want to sync. Then I click "start sync" it copies the book to the CF card and updates the license info in either the MSMETADATA or WMDRM directory (don't know which, maybe both - the files aren't text readable). I then have no trouble playing teh book on my Axim. However, there are other significant problems caused by NetLibrary recording their books as a single very long file. See my posting earlier today, "WMP 10 maximum recorded length."

Also, I find NetLibrary's time estimates for downloads to be a joke. Even with a Cable Connection that operates at 6 to 7 Mbps speeds normally, dowloads take place at about dial up speeds. Today, a book they estimated to take 2 minutes plus to download via Cable Modem took 53 minutes.
