I got my replacement Axim which has the PXA255 CPU to replace my PXA250. With the PXA250, I encoded divx videos at 320x240 landscape @ 15fps with a bitrate of 225kbps (video and audio combined)...
Seeing as how people say the PXA255 is faster, especially for video, could the PXA255 handle a higher bitrate video thus resulting in better quality? I'm reluctant to try since I don't want to waste my time if someone else knows the answer.
FYI: If I recall, the Pocket TV guys said a PXA255 300Mhz is 20% faster than a PXA250 400MHz at video...but I'm not positive, and I think they were talking about MPEG1 video, not divx...
i have back to the future here encoded at 3 settings.....half frame rate mono, full framerate (23.97) mono, and full framerate stereo.....as soon as the axe arrives ill test and report
The PXA255's are SUBSTANTIALLY faster than the PXA250's, if the system if configured to maximize their performance. The e750 is a device that does so, but the Dell Axim is supplemented ever so slightly with the PXA255 since it's ram speed remains the same and therefore is a bottleneck for the system.
Btw not only is the PXA255 300Mhz faster than the PXA250 400Mhz it is also faster than the PXA250 overclocked to 472Mhz. This is how big the margin of performance is.

thanks
From what I understand, Dell won't do an outright exchange from PXA250 to PXA255. What you got is what they advertised, an XScale processor. the only possible way of exchaging it that I know of is IF there is something wrong with your current PDA where Dell Tech Support cannot help find a solution to the problem but to send you a replacement and that it is still under warranty.

Hell Yeah!! I got a nice bonus when I got the Axim X5 Basic.
Pretty much all the Axim's have really crappy D-pads.... This is a reasonable excuse to get a replacement in my opinion. I exchanged mine twice for this reason. They don't even bat an eye cuz they know that it's a problem.

I don't know why they don't just put 5 damned buttons on there, up, down, left, right, and center. It's got to be cheaper than replacing so many units.

If they built late March and later they are PXA255's. If they are old refurbs they are not. However with the stock of refurb's continually clearing and more coming in most likely most of the stock is now PXA255.
So, would you say that the cheap ($135-$150) X5 basics on compgeeks.com would be 255s? I'd kinda figure this since people tell me they buy their Axims from dell refurb. I don't want to buy an Axim 'till I know it's a 255.
