DVD to DIVX

Just thought I would post this:

http://www.xmpeg.net/

I used version 5.03 to put Resident Evil on my axim storage card. I did it at slightly the wrong res 340 as opposed to 320 width. The file size was just over half a gig. I used core player to watch and the result was fabulous It's free and it's easy...just remember to go to the configuration menu and find a drop down list, which states the file will be 29fps ntsc and change it to pal 25fps (otherwise you will get lipsync problems) and you're away!!!

FairUse Wizard will give you a great quality movie at a size small enough to fit on a 256MB card.

Give it a try.

I did but I got an error right at the end...perhaps I'll try again later, it takes an age to code though.

Does the free edition of Fairview only work with Divx? Each time I try the Xvid coding it comes up with a code not found error(something along the lines of xvid dll core not found)....

Hours of waiting just to see that is a little frustrating, any ideas

Pete.

First, encode a short clip like a trailer until you get it set up right. Free Fairuse does Xvid fine (it's all I do) but you may need to install the Xvid codec as well.

Yep, thanks for that, works fine now. Recorded in roughly 500*270 res and Resident Evil came out at 700megs. What settings do you fellas recommend to get high quality viewing with much less file sizes??

I personally do 475 megs and force 640 width. Since I generally rip the letterbox format of most movies (in the 2:00-2:30 range), that is plenty (up to 1mbit/sec or more). Even full-screen it's not that bad.

Just experiment with a short video a little to see what you can tolerate. Remember to do the cropping if you use the letterbox video.
