avi file help required

I've just downloaded from a newsgroup an episode of 24 in avi format for my pocketpc but its made up of all these files

the hand struck eight on the 4th clock.avi.000
the hand struck eight on the 4th clock.avi.001
the hand struck eight on the 4th clock.avi.002
.004
etc....
What do i use to make 1 avi file rather than all these ?
I tried renaming the extension to .rar but that never worked, any suggestions, because in the file properties it says unknown file format !

Thanks

winrar or winace <-- either application ought to handle them

the files are compressed to take less space, for faster downloads.

It is not necessarily a RAR archive and in this case probably isn't.

Open the first part "the hand struck three on the 4th clock.avi.000" in Notepad, if the first four characters are Rar! then it is a RAR archive and you can open it via WinRAR's Extract To button. If the first four characters are RIFF then it's a split AVI and is not compressed but merely an AVI cut up into pieces, a file joining tool like HJSplit will let you put it back together quickly and easily.

For more info on actually using Usenet binary groups take a look at Slyck's Guide to The News Groups.

Microsoft Outlook has that file joing ability built into it. I know how you feel 1873. When I first went to the newsgroups I didn't have a clue either.

It's likely a split, and you'll need to grab the associated .bat file from the newsgroup.

There are a lot of videos posted in the newsgroups that do this. It's fairly useful, as some long file transfers will time out (had that problem getting movies to my dad over MSN Messenger). Using the cutter, you don't have to wait for compression, which usually isn't much for a video file that's already encoded, and you can start sending as each piece is done. Great way for dad to get videos of the kids to watch on the road.
