Shut screen in WMP10
Is there anyway to shut the screen (like in betaplayer) to conserve the battery?

I don't use WMP enough to know, but you can always hold down the power button to turn off the backlight. This will work with any application.

I don't have WMP10 but I have WMP9. I used the following steps to set the "Calendar" hardware button (Button 1) to toggle the screen from on to off. It might be the same in WMP10.

1. Open the "Tools" menu
2. Select "Settings"
3. Select "Buttons"
4. Under the "Select Function" select "Screen Toggle"
5. Press the hardware button you want to map it to.

In WMP104PPC those are the steps but it only works with the d-pad not any button. I don't consider myself big-handed but I aalways have trouble getting this to work. I use a freeware program called toggle aka screenoff that lets me map a button and turn off the screen when any program is running.
