Roxio's Audio Central which is a part of Easy CD/ DVD Creator 6 allows you to create and rip .ogg files, .wma, .wav, and .mp3.

Just like mp3, ogg is a lossy format, so yes, just as if you reencoded your mp3 into mp3 (even at the same bitrate) you would lose a bit of quality, you will lose something with an mp3-ogg conversion, but it should be minimal. Ideally you'd convert from CD directly to ogg. Then at the same bitrate as your MP3 ogg should actually sound better because it uses variable bitrate, so if it needs a bit more than 192k it uses it, while during a particularly easy to compress section of the song it may choose to use less than 192k (eg. silence at 1k, or 192k is still silence)

Well, this isn't generally a good idea. Since they are both lossy types you are definitely decreasing the quality converting mp3 to ogg.
A better comparison would be to rip the orignal track using ogg, I would be very surprised if you still saw the 50% size savings....
Some here will say mp3-ogg is "ok", well, I guess it depends on how important sound quality is.... my plan would be to keep all existing mp3's, but rip future tracks using ogg.
I believe even the vorbis people recommend the same thing- check their FAQ.

sorry to bring back a thread but, I ripped a CD using WMP to .wma files and then I ripped it to .ogg files and got the same file size. I was using 128k for both of the files.
Why? I thought ogg was smaller

I would like PcocketMusic, with winamp's playlist selection system.
I do not understand why they messed the entire playlist up by making all songs tapped, selected. Why would you want to select more than one song?

Try any one of the CD ripping programs suggested by the OGG-Vorbis web site.

I use dbpoweramp for file conversion, and it does support direct cd ripping or conversion using wma, mp3, or ogg formats.
Question: have others had trouble with WithMp3 creating error messages? I have it installed to the SD card, and often when turning on the AX get a message saying withmp3 won't start. I don't have it in Startup, but do have a shorcut on the in TDlaunch on the Today screen.

I found that the dbpoweramp works really well for ripping directly from a cd to .ogg files. I think you have to dl the extra .ogg codec to make sure it can rip to ogg though.
I think the main benifit of ogg over MP3 is that you can run an ogg file at a lower bit rate and get a higher quality. I ripp directly from CD and I use 64kb bit rate for my ogg files. That makes an entire CD about 16 MB usually. The sound quality in turn is as good as an MP3 at 128 kb bit rate.
I think that is the real advantage of ogg over MP3. When I rip from CD to MP3 using 64kb bitrate the sound quality is noticably worse. With ogg I don't notice that difference.

Correct, it is an add-on, as well as other formats. There is a link for those tools at their site.
How have people found cd's ripped to Ogg vs. ripped to Wma (without the mp3 step)? I think file size is similar and certainly seems acceptable quality at 64k, but I have not compared the same tracks in both formats.

dBpowerAmp converter is free. It gives you the abiltiy to right click on a music file and convert to any format for which you have the codec . Visit the codec central page for codecs not included with the defaults.
