I've put them head to head and FairUse swept the floor with AGK.
Better speed, better output, better everything.

There's the answer! Fairuse really is a nice piece of software.

That's great news! What that means is that there are two really great tools available for people who would like to convert their ripped DVD content for use on PDAs (or other platforms) without having to continually cough up $$$ for the newest versions of software that doesn't do any better (and frequently does worse) than the freeware!
I downloaded FairUse and was put off by the fact that it only seems to operate against ISOs. But then I started thinking that this may be the best way to rip data from a DVD anyway. I know that DVD-Decrypter can rip TO an ISO, but does anyone know if DVD-Decrypter can rip FROM an ISO. If so, then I’ll always rip to ISO (I keep all my rips on hard-drive all the time – that’s right, I have a BIG HD :)) and then rip VOBs from the ISO only when I need them.
I’m hoping that some day in the not to distant future, I’ll be able to buy a DVD burner to which I can burn un-reduced original DVD ISOs to have true “no data loss” (but unencrypted) backups of my DVDs.

Ok, I took all the advice in this thread and tried FairUse. Here’s what I found.
Encoding: Much faster! I have a dual CPU machine and FairUse did a much better job of keeping my processors busy. I believe this would also apply to machines with only one processor that employ hyper-threading. My encode time on a 96 minute movie was less that 80 minutes! (targeting a 310MB file w/ 96kbps audio)
Quality: Comparable with Auto Gordian Knot (AGK). The quoted poster said his FairUse quality was better – I’m curious how he determined that.
Playback complexity: This one is a bit obscure. I benchmarked the same video segment engoded by AGK and FairUse. The one by FairUse benchmarked significantly higher (approx. 10%). What good is that? I can run my Axim at a lower processor speed (power saving mode) and still not drop frames. That means the battery last longer which is important when I’m on a flight to Asia and have no power source
Ease of use: Got to agree here; FairUse is much more user friendly (and more informative) then AGK.
So I think I’m getting converted here but I have one more question. I used DVD-Decrypter to rip to an ISO on my hard-drive and then ran Fairuse against that ISO. What if I want to use a tool that needs VOBs? I can’t figure out how to get DVD-Decrypter to rip VOBs from an ISO. And I don’t want to rip to both ISO and VOB on my hard-drive. It’s big, but let’s not push it.
Any help? How can I pull a VOB out of a decrypted ISO?

Any reason you ripped to ISO first? For a Fairuse-only encoding you can use Fairuse's built-in ripper. For VOBs you probably will need a different utility, but is there something you need to use VOBs for that Fairuse can't really do?

Well, I'm not sure. All the work I've done with ripped DVDs to this point has been with VOBs produced by DVD-Decrypter. I'm just nervous that if I switch over to ripping everything to ISOs and delete my old VOBs a tool will come along requiring VOBs and I'll have to re-rip them all.
I don't want to have to store both ISOs and VOBs on my machine. My 450GB hard-drive goes a long way, but not that far... It seams there must be a way to extract the VOBs from an ISO without having to burn the ISO back to disk. Does windows allow me to mount a DVD ISO as a virtual device? And if so, would DVD-Decrypter allow me to rip VOBs from that virtual DVD drive?

I am not too sure about the things you want to do with VOBs and ISOs, as I don't really work with either of them now that I use Fairuse. Just want to make sure you know that you don't need to use either, and that fairuse has its own built-in ripper.

But FairUse requires a decrypter, does it not?

I'm not the most technical person in the world. But with FairUse, all you need is a DVD and some time to kill while it's converting everything. My 7 year old could rip her Spongebob DVD by herself using FairUse if I'd let her.

For 99.9% of the movies you will do the answer is NO.
If you do have to use DVD Decrypter for the 0.1% you can delete the files after. Why you would want to store them I don't understand.
For FairUse you put the DVD in your drive, run the program, and enjoy your .avi file when it is done. That's it. Don't try and over think it to much.

For vids on our PC. Use pocket divx encoder. Works great and its free.
Doesnt work for ripping dvds though only movies you have downloaded or previously ripped.
It is straight forward and gives you the choice of video and audio quality and allows previews of file sizes and clips.

An ISO is simply an image of a disk's contents. CD's, DVD's etc. That said, there are programs on the net that will allow you to view, extract and add files to an existing ISO image. Also, Windows it's self does not have the ability to mount an ISO as a virtual device.

DVD -> AnyDVD -> SmartRipper -> (DR.DivX+DivxPro6) -> MPEG4.AVI
*** WORKS EVERY FREAKIN TIME ***
Excellent video and audio quality, original frame rate, 320x240, about 500MB for 1+1/2 hour flick.
Very usable at higher compressions as well, I just like to have 2 (1GB) or 4 (2GB) concerts or movies per SD card.
(AnyDVD and DivxPro can be trialed, smart ripper is free.)

If you're really doing all that to encode a DVD, you REALLY need to give Fairuse a try.
