OK, but what I'm doing gives me super results and flexibility.
(Oh, I forgot I rip wav files using DVD2AVI and then pick the one that sounds best before encoding DivX)
Everything so far has been QVGA. Overnight I'll be encoding a 2 hour VGA for the first time to just under 1GB. I assume TCPMP can deliver VGA. (?)
I'll benchmark the results, and judge whether I need to go larger. I've got 2GB cards that read more than fast enough do deliver the data...
I use Fairuse (single step) or DVD-Decrypter + Gordian Knot (two steps) to encode a 2 hour movie down to 310 MB at VGA res with superior quality! You need to look around a bit!
I just went to Fairuse's web site and found that a new version is available. Version 2 is only $10.99 until September 30th.
It's also important to note that once you buy, it's lifetime upgrades for free.
And the trial version of FairUse does everything you'd ever need for Pocket PC (come on...seriously...who's ripping >700MB avi files for their Pocket PC? ).
Still...great program and worth chipping in towards.
I'm still convinced (in my own mind) that 250MB encoding with 80 kps audio rate is the best way to go to enjoy both the ability to bring a number of movies with you as well as to still have high enough quality to enjoy the movie.
Seems to me that Fair use sounds like a great program. How does it compare side by side with Dr. Divix? Dr. Divix is simple enough to use and seems to give good results. Why switch to Fair Use? or should i not?

The best reason is that from the time you put the DVD into your drive until the time you get your file, you use the same program with Fairuse. It's very user friendly, offers as much flexibility or more than every other program out there (that I've seen). And if you wish, you can have it automate the whole process.
I had GREAT success putting 1:59 of 30fps on VGA in ~1GB. The sound and video quality is outstanding, near-DVD quality. No flickering, which I attribute to the superior video of the X50v.
I benchmarked it on my X50v and I ran 155% with the standard CPU clock speed settings on the PDA.
P.S. I have 6 2GB SD cards and as many 1GB SD cards... I calculated the data rate versus benchmarking the cards: I've got nice headroom there too.
The only diappointing thing is my QVGA device cannot shrink VGA sized video fast enough. I can only benchmark at about 65%, so I will need to keep a separate collection of QVGA versus VGA videos if I intend to continue using my old PDA with video...

So where do I get this fairuse program? Tried using that pocket dvd program last night and got a HUGE avi file.....thought it would make it able to be read on ppc. Couldnt load with the windows media player. Are there any tutorials out there? How do you make a movie into 2 files instead of one HUGE one?
I used FairUse in the Divx 3.11 days and haven't tried it lately. It IS really easy to use but there are probably a lot of things you don't have control over.
AutoGordianKnot pretty much uses the same tools I use in my step-by-step process.
I like to have control over the entire encoding process so I:
1 -- Rip the DVD and Subtitles with DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0
2 -- Extract the Subtitles with VobSub 2.23
3 -- Parce the VOBs with DGIndex 1.4.3 ( .d2v & .ac3 )
4 -- Create an .avs script for processing / frame serving through AVIsynth 2.55
5 -- Preview processing, IVTC, decimation, dominate field, etc. with VirtualDub 1.6.10
6 -- Encode 2-pass Divx 5.2.1 ( I have issues with 6.0 crashing w/ VobSub ) with VirtualDub 1.6.10
7 -- Use BeSweet to mixdown AC3 to 2-ch or boost levels if necessary
8 -- Mux Video and AC3 with VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.1
9 -- Resync subtitles with VobSub Resync ( if necessary for imbedded intros )
10 - Create ZoomPlayer .df & .asx playlist files and archive to DVDs.
My encode rates are about 28 frames per second on a P4 3.2 GHz frame serving through Decomb / DGIndex / AVIsynth using Fast Recompress. These files are large ( about 700MB for 45 minutes @ 720/640x480 ) but play fine on the Axim without re-encoding.
