Just use Divxencoder for PDA. Its free and can really make movies small.

Nearly all, if not all of the video encoding tools being discussed in this thread allow target size selection.

If you use this path, you don't need AnyDVD as SmartRipper has already decrypted the DVD.

DVD -> SmartRipper -> Dr DivX+DivxPro6 -> MPEG4.avi

works fine.

It's true the SmartRipper is effective at decrypting many DVD's, however it doesn't work all the time. So I always have AnyDVD running when ripping a DVD.

For somebody going strictly the free-legal-budget route, dropping AnyDVD is probably a good choice--until you get that one DVD that won't work. (Then you might have to look for something else free, like DVD Decrypter, ISO buster, etc.)

DVD -> AnyDVD -> SmartRipper -> DVD2AVI(Downmix & Normalize Audio)* -> Dr.DivX+DivxPro6 -> MPEG4.avi

*Dr. Divx does a poor job recognizing the correct audio tracks, and even worse at boosting audio. The DVD2AVI step takes an extra 15 minutes, but the results are well worth it, compared to 2-4 hours of encoding with Dr. Divx and finding out the audio was crap.

transfer to x30

Ok.. Am I missing the obvious. I used Fairuse to rip a DVD to my desktop pc. When i try to copy or paste it to the 1meg sd card on my x30, I get a pop-up window saying "transferring/converting". After several attempts I finally got it copied only once (after a +30 minutes wait) I had a file that was not recognizable with a truncated file name.
I tried using Explorer as well as Activesync to get a usable copy onto the x30. Thanks ahead...

A card reader works much better. Also you only need to copy over the .avi file. The rest can be deleted.

*The latest version of FairUse is 2.1a

Yes, active sync can give up on file transfers and leaves an unrecognizable crumb on your storage card.

Get an inexpensive card reader, it's worth it.

Yep, got a reader, transfered file and everything is working just fine now.
Why won't Activesync allow for such transfers??? Is it something to do with the "converting" of the file for the PPC format??

I don't think the latest AGKs have spyware, I have not had one with spyware when I tried it (twice in the past couple months). Fairuse has no spyware either.

Is there something missing in the space there?

How about information on the settings, etc.?

Still...great program and worth chipping in towards.

I'm still convinced (in my own mind) that 250MB encoding with 80 kps audio rate is the best way to go to enjoy both the ability to bring a number of movies with you as well as to still have high enough quality to enjoy the movie.
I'm testing both right now (not at the same time). First up is FairUse...and to be honest...I REALLY like what i'm seeing so far. All-in-One packages actually put me off because I like to tinker, but I don't have the time to do that much anymore, so i'm willing ti give away some flexibility to have an easy solution.
