HELP! Playing H.264 .mp4 files with Axim x50v
Just got a new iMac and got ffmpegX for OS 10.4. I'm amazed that I can encode to .avi, .mpg, .mov, .vob, and .mp4. I've been messing around with the different encodings and I'm totally in love with the .mp4 H.264 format, it's so compressed, yet so clear!!
ANYWAYS, I try putting those H.264 files on my Axim x50v and it plays and the aac audio sounds good, however, it plays super slow and is really choppy. The settings for the H.264 are 640x480 resolution, 96kbps audio, 29 FPS (NTSC), 791 kbps video. Why is it so choppy, is it the encoding? Do I have to change the frame rate? Or rather, is it the Axim settings, it is just too much for the Axim to play the H.264 .mp4 file? I'd really appreciate anyone's help in this matter so that I can play small, yet clear video files. Thanks a bunch for input!

It's a great format.
Have a look here: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...ighlight=h.264 Where is the video stored? Is it on a storage card or over the network? H.264 must be processor intensive, do you have the CPU set to max?

Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

I always have the processor set to max of 624mhz, however, the file is on my Compact Flash card, which could have some effect on the playback. I'm going to go ahead and read what they have to say at MobileRead, thanks for the thread link

It won't make any difference at that resolution, without hardware acceleration PDAs are simply not fast enough to decode AVC at 640x480. Even at QVGA resolution videos with a lot of on-screen movement drop a few frames.
IMHO if you weigh up the quality improvement/space saving versus the extra power required to decode AVC then Divx/XviD with AAC audio is still the most practical format - for my money anyway.
