that's pretty cool, but it would void your warranty. With so many people having issues and getting replacements, I don't know if it is worth it.

Here is something that may be interesting. The Axim is limited by it's ram speed and the new additional 64mb stacked ram is faster than the original ram. This could mean a large difference in performance in conjunction with a PXA255 chip.

I would probably do it as long as it does not change the warranty (which i guess it does)

It appears that the warranty is voided. They state that they supply a 90 day warranty through them and that the warranty is no longer through the original manufacturer.

It is a neat Geek Factor, built-in memory. I'll pass, but intresting !

$100.00 for advanced model to upgrade to 128MB? Its still only an additional 64MB. I'd rather invest in a SD card of a bigger size.

The SD slot is I/O incapable for perephrials so its obvious the only thing its doing is memory. What else are you going to use the SD slot for?

You can get 128MB in an SD for under $50. Why pay $100 for built-in?

If you have a 128MB card already, that extra $$ can bump it up to a 256MB card. 128MB ($45) plus the difference to a 256mb ($70) is only $35 bucks.

If you have a 256MB Card ($70) an additional $100 will get you still $100 shy of the 512MB cost. BUT Just buy a second 256MB SD card and call it 512MB total. Besides, is only 128MB built-in.

Let me know is there is a good application to have the 128MB built-in.

I also hear that some new models of PPCs will have the option of 128MB built-in. That may be a better way to spend the $100. Sell your used Axim on eBay, tag on the $100 for the new model (once they come out) and wait for Rad-Man to give ya a deal.

What REALLY intrests me is that they have some coding to access the extended memory?

I wonder if it is some type of patch. If they perform some other coding I would REALLY be intrested.

I wonder what else they could do besides ext-memory. IR enhancements, BUS enhancements (althogh that should be circuitry), microphone/speaker upgrades etc...

Now that sounds interesting. Perhaps when my warranty has expired... Hmmm....

Heres what they say about how the memory is controlled & about the speed increase over using SD or CF:

Dell Axim X5 128MB Upgrade

We have now released a new stacked RAM upgrade for the Dell Axim X5 400Mhz Advanced unit.

We can add 64MB to the unit for a total of 128MB. 64MB is managed by memory manager and 64MB is setup as our Hi-Speed internal storage card called T2T Disk.

Using our T2T Disk instead of a removable storage card does have several benefits:

Speed. Our T2T Disk access speed is up to 100x faster than SD or CF since it is SDRAM, not compressed and is accessed directly by the CPU.

Secure, since it can't be lost or misplaced.

Programs can be installed to the T2T Disk leaving conventional memory free for operating RAM. The user doesn't have to worry about a program being installed on one card and needing access to another card that has their data.

http://www.pocketpctechs.com/delx5up.asp

The upgrade costs $99 + shipping.

The upgrade does require a modification to the ROM and our proprietary driver.

The only app. that I see benefit with this is GPS. Loading bigger map sections and reading thru them faster. Maybe server monitor/control too.

anything else?

Video playback, gaming, program load up time. The first too could be substantially affected. The ram is the bottleneck for PXA255 Axims, with stacked ram, the extra 64mb could be quite a bit faster than the original 64mb. The PXA255 system bus is made for much faster ram than it runs with on the Axim. This stacked ram could shrink the FSB to RAM speed discrepency and therefore bring performance near to that of Toshiba e750. Combine this with 590Mhz overclocking and things could get interesting.
