Newbie needs help with wireless internet
Hello,

I'm quite computer literate until it comes to wireless. Here's what I want to do and haven't got a clue as to where to start. I have an Axim and use an Verizon Startac ST7868W cell phone. I personally don't care about the phone, but need it when I travel. Back to the Axim. How am I able to make it into a traveling e-mail and Web browser? It's a pain to carry my laptop whenever I travel. Currently I'm using Road Runner at home and they do have a dial-up number. I'd also be willing to spend a few dollars a month extra to subscribe to an additional wireless service. Suggestions please?

Thank you,
Mark

With your Verizon phone it looks as if you should be able to do the following.

Connect your phone to your Axim with this cable

Instructions on how to setup your connection with Verizon's eXpressNetwork are here: (click #7 in the first section)

Note: I don't know how Verizon handles billing while using eXpressNetwork bandwidth or minutes. You may wish to call them and see if your current plan covers it or if you'll be incurring extra charges.

A great discussion board for everything relating to cell phones is:
http://www.howardforums.com/
(You might ask the billing question in the Verizon forum, it's likely you'll get a fast answer)

Cheers,
Gabe

If you can live with a slow (14.4K) connection speed, yu can use the Gomadic cable to dial into the "old" Verizon network without any additional fees -- you just use up your minutes. I think there are directions on the Gomadic website as well as much information scattered about the forums. It works well for me for email, but browsing (other than PDA optimized sites is slow).

Thanks for the advice. The Gomadic cable looks like a winner, but slightly overpriced in my opinion. I may have to put that on my Father's Day list

Two of my brother-in-laws just got new Verizon phones and were able to get Internet and E-mail access for only $4.95 a month additional. I think it's a promotional thing, but I may check it out. I really don't want to read my e-mail with a magnifying glass though!
