This is not an answer, it is a question. I often use my x51v in the car with the Dell GPS and NAVTEQ maps (works flawlessly) but I find that if I am not about to become lost that the Axim makes an excellent "cd stacker" (using Mortplayer).
My question is, how are other users connecting to their car radio? I currently use a cd adaptor but find it is fairly "agricultural", I would like to use an FM Modulator and have seen some fairly cheap ones out of Hong Kong on eBay but a few posts lately have been a bit critical of their performance.
1. Hard wiring the audio input is not feasible without tearing the car apart.
2. Cigarette lighter plug-in is not desireable as I only have one and I need it for my Axim.
3. Hard wiring the modulator would be acceptable if it was a good one.
4. I'm thinking the best solution for me might be a battery (rechargeable AA or AAA) powered modulator.
I would be interested in seeing what others are using and what sort of results they are getting.

CD adapter is rather old school, but it gets the job done, without any extra power required and the sound is better than the modulator. I live in an area with crowed public frequencies and there are few frequencies that my fm modulator can truly lock into, eithout some interference. When you are traveling you have to stop and switch it. If you go that routeand you can find one, get one that automatically locks into a frequency. I have a battery powered belkin, it's servicable and fits better in my travel accessory bag, but the one I use in my car is the CD adapter.
You have pretty much many options. Most of them covered in this article: http://indashpc.org/new/docs/Car%20C...TO%20final.htm
It is talking about PC in the car, but the same idea.
We already have a car adapter for X5x/3x to work in a car with CD quality. It will be out in a month. Japanese and European cars for now :)
Once you try true CD quality it is hard to go back to FM. Even wired one.
FM modulators are garbage. If you have a cassette player in your car use an adaptor. The sound is much better.
If not, hardwiring or using an audio adaptor is another solution. It really depends on what is a priority for you.
Sound quality, ease of use, cost, etc. What kind of car do you have? What kind of head unit (stereo)?
I have a scion and it was very easy to instal a PIE audio input adaptor.

Are you really from Antartica? Cool !!! Ha Ha
I have a Saab (1996) which has a pretty fair sound system but is fairly well integrated into the dash. It has provision for a cd stacker (not fitted) so it would have audio inputs but getting at them could be a different matter. From the few feedbacks so far it looks like I should forget about the fm modulator and research hard wiring. Either that or stick with my cassette adaptor.
Anyway many thanks for your reply and stay warm.
I'm an Aussie in the UK so I have a bit of a thing about temperature at the moment, I don't like it when it goes minus.
If you do get a modulator you want to find one with alot of frequency choices. That way if one, or half a dozen are already taken, you can still get in there somewhere hopefully.

Just to clarify for us non-stereo-techies, the cd adapter means going thru the fm modulator that the cd changer would go through, correct? It still means poorer sound than a casette adapter if I'm not mistaken.

A "cd adaptor" is not a term or component I am familiar with. What I am wanting to do is use my x51v as a cd stacker and to do that I must get the audio output from my axim into the car radio. I am presently using a cassette adaptor (dummy cassette with a lead that plugs into the axim audio output). The alternative I am considering is a fm modulator which is a mini radio transmitter that plugs into the axim audio output and lets you tune the car radio (fm band) into the selected frequency. The feedback I am getting so far indicates that this is not the way to go.
Sorry if I have insulted you with an over simplified description.

OOOPS! cassette adapter is so old school, that in a senior moment I called it a CD. I meant a cassette adapter - the fake cassette with the pigtail. It gives me better sound that the belkin fm modulator.
I use an fm modulator and have never had problems with it. Sound quality is fair for playing MP3's.
This depends on where your car antenna is and where the fm modulator is placed. In my car, with the fm modulator near the antenna the sound quality still sucked compared to a cassette adapter. This is what I used for my car. It works so much better but that is because it is stereo specific. There are other types out there.

That's pretty much what we are doing now. You will be able to use Axim in you car in iPod like fashion. Switch between playlists like disks and do song navigation directly from car stereo. And you'll get the best sound possible.
The adapters will be out in a month for meta testing for many car makes.
For now it works with WMP10 an will have a plugin for TCPMP as well :)

I agree with him.. stay away from FM modulators.. my friend was using one with his XM and when he finally got a custom auxilliary input adapater for his mazda6 he was blown away by the difference..
I haven't purchased one yet, but I can buy an auxilliary input for my radio from the dealership.... uses standard 3.5mm jack...
search some car forums over your specific car model or brand and see if there is something similar.. otherwise, id' just stick with the cassette adapter, my sister use one for her mp3 player
