I don't really care what hardware it would take to do it, but I would want an Axim that could be far faster and responsive in multitasking, opening applications, and just general operation. I'm perfectly satisfied with its speed in terms of video playback, games and whatnot, but I hate when I turn it on and it takes 5-10 seconds before it starts to respond and then sometimes locks for no reason for a few seconds whenever i'm navigating windows.

I'm not sure if everything's right with my axim, though; it's pretty unstable and it only lasts 50-150 minutes with cpu on auto and screen on dim, depending on how I use it. Could have sworn it was supposed to last 3 times that long...

Looks like the perfect Axim would be a UMPC. The "evolution."

My X50v is an excellent PDA. I would like more ROM like the X51v but I do not want WM5.

I like Wm 2003 SE but I would like to be able to delete parts of it which I do not use such as :-

Pocket Excel - I use Planmaker or SpreadCE.
PocketWord - I use Worsmaker.
System Backup - I use both Sprite Backup and Spb Backuo.
File Explorer - I use Resco ot Advanced Explorer or Total Commander

There are several others.

Maybe Dell could make a piece of software which lets you make your own rom image for the Axim. I'm sure that almost every Aximsite member would like that, right?

Icon14 I Luv my axim x50v.

My axim x50v has been been updated to wm5 and it works fine. I have a powered arkon holder in my car with a Rikaline GPS 6033 and TOM TOM 6 (australia maps) installed on my axim. Works like a charm. My axim has all the software I need for my day to day life functions and I have to say it has been in my top three purchases of electronics I have ever made. :approve:

I'd like built-in GPS, better battery life, the ability to change or delete system files, a solid state hard drive (like a CF card but built in), more RAM - a lot more ram - maybe a USB port to connect devices to it . Everything would seem easy to do. Too bad it's unlikely, at least by Dell.

Mine is an X50/520 that I've had for a couple of years now. It is completely reliable and I have about a dozen apps I use regularly on it. Solid as a rock. I can't imagine needing anything more than what this box provides.

I would like more memory and a hard drive, mainly for movies and music. I'd like a better way to sync to a PC. Better battery life would be a plus. Built in GPS would be nice. They could do away with the CF slot if they put a HD in. USB hosting would be nice. WiMax would be nice.
There's a lot of great software that is written for the PDA, while there are PC programs that do the same thing, perhaps there are a lot of people who have come to depend on there PDA's and those software programs. Instead of trying to make PPC run XP software, software developers shoudl write more desktop companion software programs.
I dont think that the UMPC should replace the PPC. Cost is an problem, size (thickness) is a problem,boot-up time and battery life would be a problem.
I would love to have a UMPC, I would use it like I am using this laptop now, surfing and watching tv at the same time, away from the desk top. But I am planning on getting a laptop of my own, (this is wife's work laptop) for that purpose, cause who wants to spend almost $2000 to be able to sit on the couch and surf on a reasonable size screen? I can do it with my PPC. Almost anything, that most anybody would want to do at home or in the street with a computer can be done with a PPC or a converged device. And can be done more easily with PPC software than XP.
For the business world I could see a need for a UMPC.
If they could make a PPC with a maybe 5" screen so that you dont have to scroll from side to side as much, and yet make it so that you can wear it on your belt, or make it fit in a good sized jacket pocket ?i would want it.
In my humble opinion a ppc needs to do the following. In my day there are short term notes, get milk, mail the mail, stuff that, i think of and need to do to day. It is still easier for me to keep that info on paper. Anything that I need beyond today, it is easier or better to keep it in a PDA. In any info that I might need from the net, or other resources is better in the PDA. Any info that I might collect in a given day and may need later, past today is better in the PDA. The screen needs to be big enough to write on confortably or draw on (Phatpad) yet small enough to hold in your hand comfortably. And really as i hold my ppc we maybe there already.
A PPC needs to be a seamless extension of one's memory, something that is always there to take a note, remind you of something, or give you a quick way to access a piece of information. Like the weather, time, news updates so on so forth. Something to keep up with all the background information, so that you can totally focus on what you are trying to do at a given time.

I keep reading many would prefer an x50v over an x51v. I've never used WM5. Is it bad? I've heard mised thoughts. Thanks!

As time has passed and many new pocket pc (phones) with WM6(.1) have come out, I thought it might be nice to revive this thread to see if anyone's thoughts on this issue have changed at all since the last post.
