New Axim models
I have been eyeing the X51V for about a year, the only thing holding me back at this point is the possibility of a new model. Does anyone know if Dell will be releasing any newer PDAs, and or if they have discontinued the Axim line altogether?
Thanks.

Doubts on a new model. Dell could have done very well on this if they had correct the little niggling things and made the product a bit more user friendly. Instead sounds like they will throw up their hands and/or introduce cellphones.

It shows the maturity of Handango as an organisation that they are discreet in their dealings with their commercial partners.
I'm sorry the OP has had problems keeping his software up to date and hanging on to his freebies but I suppose Handango is a business not a bunch of mates.
This petulant "Never liked you anyway --- Horrid, horrid, horrid!" thread is quite amazing.

WTF, Budgie? I think you posted to the wrong thread!
By the way, Dell is getting out of the PDA business, although it looks like they are going to replace it with a UMPC line. Keep your fingers crossed.

Unless thier umpc fits in my coat pocket and lasts at least 3-4 hours on a charge, I wouldn't really call it a suitable replacement to my axim, though. I'd love to have one just for a toy- who wouldn't- but they just aren't practical to have on you at all times in my opinion. That's why I wish someone would come out with some new technology. I don't think intel's even developing anything except the new blackberry chip, so it looks like pxa270 is the best windows mobile is gonna get for a while.

Add phone capability, expand the battery bay to 2200 standard, and call it the Axim X60v. That will kick some bottoms.

Are there even any new mobile chips in development anymore? Is anything in the foreseeable future going to be available to replace the current ARM chips? I've been shopping around because i'm ready to upgrade to a new pda, but I can't find anything better than my x50v that compensates for the ram lost to wm5. I can't find any device at all besides x50/51v with 3D acceleration either, the other thing I just can't do without now that I've had it all this time. Did intel seriously develop the 2700g just to be used in two devices (excluding that one umpc that needs it just to display svga)?
I have trouble finding the answers to these questions without sorting through 10 years of outdated news or ads and reviews on the internet.

2200mah battery? Are you out of your mind? That thing would be a workout and a half talking on it! The 1300mah-toting HTC Apache/Wizards are already heavy enough!

Are YOU out of your mind? My 1100mAh isn't enough to power my Axim for hour when I'm watching movie streamed over Wi-Fi!
I'd go for the 2200mAh battery!

Can we start with yours!!!! Forget the phone but make it more user friendly and possibly have technology to capture any type of signal for internet access!

I very much dislike pda/cell combos.
However, adding an air card (or what not) would definitely be neat.
I have Skype on my pda, and I purchased a bt headset for $30 bucks, so I can make VoIP calls with my device.
Having a cellular connectivity on my device, as well as wifi and bt, would be kick-ass.
To resolve the having to copy all of your phone numbers on to your cell issue, I purchased a phone that I can sync with outlook. =/

Whaaat? Whaaaaaaat? Didn't Bill Gates say that the future was in UMPC before he retired? So of course Dell will want to get in on that bandwagon. After all, Microsoft is Dell's friend. Microsoft is everyone's friend.
Perhaps too, a UMPC (the bone in the water) MIGHT be easier to sell in the usual Dell slash-prices-no-customer-support-clueless-marketing-woops-should-have-beta-tested-take-no-prisoners-sell-it-with-the-bugs style in which they've sold the Axim (the bone in the mouth.)
Instead of trying to be a leader, Dell is at this point, content to be a follower. At the least you'd expect them to either sell off the Axim name/design to someone else and make SOME money. Especially after they went to the trouble to do A12.
Personally, I think instead of going for the phone side, the next 'Axim' should add global positioning/native USB/music player/updated bluetooth/camera/TV out (to take advantage of the myview). Bundle it with mojopack and skype.

Granted, if we had every feature listed in this forum, we'd need a lead acid battery to power the thing. Not everybody does everything. I like streamed movies over Wi-Fi as much as the next guy, but one feature I look for is how heavy the thing is and how long I can hold it up to my ear without having my shoulder cramp up. Since, you know, one of the features of a phone is talking on it.
Dell would likely either go down the HTC PDA-smartphone-alike route, or go UMPC. Either way, they're in Microsoft's backpocket.
However, seeing as how Verizon is talking with YouTube for content deals and the appearance of Slingbox -- I do believe that portable media is going to catch on very fast. I don't know if Wi-Fi is the most efficient medium though.

I was looking seriously in Japan to pick up some UMPC device to replace my aged Clie PG_SJ33 as that one had had good service, but I needed more. The problem, do I go with a device i can rely on for an alarm clock (the x51v) and a mp3 and video player, or one that can multi-task and I don't have to fiddle with too much (UMPC)? Well, i went with the Axim mostly because of timing, but... I'm regretting that decision a bit. After seeing my friend's PSP screen in comparision to mine for showing video, well.... at least I don't have to re-encode. Having issues with apps grabbing button presses in various emulators and such too, the battery door "opening" (not really) and suddenly shutting off the PDA when I'm jogging... hmmm.
I'm using the 2200mAh battery, my small one is on standby, i can't imagine not using the big battery. Just a faster interface... my x51v seems sluggish. My Clie (66mhz Dragonball) was faster!
