I'm also wondering why new powerhouse devices like the O2 XDA Flame and Sharp EM ONE have the latest and greatest in mobile graphics(nVIDIA GoForce 5500), but only the old PXA270 to handle general-purpose tasks. Sure, the FPS ports would make great use of the new graphics chip, but I don't think SNES or other console emulators would benefit from it much compared to a new CPU.
In any case, would a DSP paired to a PXA320 allow for hardware floating-point functions? I believe the lack of hardware FP capability is what's limiting many ARM handhelds at least where 3D is concerned, and would explain why my K6-2 366 legacy system can run Quake in software 320x240 better than my T|C can at the same resolution...(I haven't managed to get around to running Pocket Quake on my new X50v, though. Now would be a good time to start...) Hardware FP also might help with emulation as well.
