Hi
I recall hearing about Dell developing with another company an Axim/phone edition. Has anyone heard about that in a while? If so, I would be interested in hearing about it.
Instead of using a traditional or cellular phone, have the Axim "packetize" your voice conversation and transfer it over IP.
There is a fairly significant growth in the VOIP market right now in a lot of corporates. But it requires significant investment and expertise. Not just simply a matter of enabling IP :)

I hate VOIP. The company I used to work for used ip phones. They always had problems. I wont put any money into it until I hear many "rave" reviews from reliable sources.
You don't have to lose sound quality and it doesn't have to be unreliable. Hence my comments about it needing significant expertise and expense to be deployed "properly".
I know of one major telecommunictions carrier that is running a portion (and soon it will be most) of their long distance traffic over an IP Network. And we're not talking about a little rinky dink mom-and-pop carrier here, we're talking about a LARGE carrier. The fact is that the end users cannot tell the difference in this case.
So just like there are bad LAN deployments and good LAN deployments, there are good and bad VOIP deployments.

personally, I use VOIP at home for my voice service.
It was really nice to be able to "Fire" the local baby bell.
Been using Vonage for about 3 months now and the service ROCKS.
I've often found Brighthand to have a slight IPAQ Bias and I think this is an example. I believe that this will also work in an Axim or many other Pocket PC Platforms. The article makes no mention of this and hints strongly that it's an IPAQ only device yet the product page actually says that it's compliant with PPC2002 and WM2003.
So I'm not saying that it will work, but if you're seriously looking for something then have a good look at this page. Maybe contact the vendor for confirmation.
Also it's GSM not CDMA.

Just use a GSM GSRP CF card ubtil a phone edition comes out. There's a couple listed on the forum. They're a little expensive but if you consider the added cost of another cell plus getting rid of the "extra device" it may be worth it to you.
OK everyone this is the best deal out there if you are in the US! I am currently using this and it works GREAT! It has a cell phone and data options. This is a 3G compatible card which CDMA. I can stream small video over this card with no problem. All you have to do is get a Sprint PCS account get a regular phone and add this as a second line for only $10 and then get the unlimited Vision for another $10 a month. Check it out! below is a link to the CF/PCMCIA card.
Koolaide it's a nice device but it is ultra-klunky. I stopped using mine on my Axim for just that reason. Even with the new battery replacement/redesign available for purchase off the www.cf2031.com site, it's still a frustrating solution.
Why can't we get a great PDA/phone combination out there? I'm dying to stop carrying multiple devices.
