Question Longer Syncing Cable?

This is kinda stupid, but does anyone know of a website that sells really long Syncing Cables for the Axim. I would really like a cable that is a lot longer than the factory cable. Thanks;)

Don't know of any long cables but there are 'extension' cables you could use. I think you want USB "A" male to USB "A" female cable.

I beleive that there is a limit on how long a USB cable can be due to the degradation of the data along a long cable, so you might want to watch how long you do make it. I'm not sure tho, but I think I remember 24 feet being the limit ...

Maybe its changed with USB 2.0, i'm not sure.

But as for the longer syncing cable, do what ikehiker said. A USB "A" is the same kind that does into your computer.

I'm sure that's true and also, if you have any problems with ActiveSync using the regular cable, adding the extension will almost certainly make it worse.

USB 2.0 supports a much higher data rate, so the cables can be even "less" long, so first answer first....

IN GENERAL... don't use extension cables with USB, they are short for a reason.

HOWEVER... for low speed devices, and the Axim, a quality extension cable is probably not going to hurt you.

Why not? The Axim doesn't really have a true USB port, it's a serial port, so the throughput from the computer to the Axim is already severely limited.... waaaayyy under USB maximum speeds.

That's one reason syncing over Wifi is so much dang faster than the cable. You are getting network speeds versus serial speeds.

I think there are some technical misunderstandings here:

1. The Ax is a true USB device, even though it's not very fast.

2. USB 2.0 cables are expensive, not because of their shielding. Because USB 2.0 can go up to 450 mbs, the cables must be impedance-controlled (a little too technical for here. pm me if you really want to know ...) so that reflections won't degrade the signals. At Axim USB speeds, this isn't a problem. You can get away with several hundred feet of twisted pair if you want to build an really long cable. Just don't try to use it for any other USB device!

usb 2.0 cables for 20.00 woooowww

i bought 2 for $2 each
thatz rite .. $2 for a 10` usb 2.0 cable
http://www.computersurplusoutlet.com...tID=CAB-USB210

and BTW the loss of quality is not true (atleast not in my case) cuz i connected the axim to my computer using 2 hubs (cheap ones ) that hav 6' cables.. and 2 10' usb cables and i think the hubs are only usb 1.1... not sure and my usb card is 2.0 .. i guess that makes a difference
anywayz thatz over 30` of usb extension cables!
