Theory: The current draw from USB ports is suggested for 100 ma, and limited to no more than 500 ma spread over ALL devices connected by USB. Most only provide 100 ma reliably. Hubs do even worse, unless they are individually powered, in which case it's slightly more reliable.
The Dell uses a 1440 ma battery to go maybe 7 hours, which means it will use on average 200 ma/hour. Ah, we have a dilemma! If the USB only supplies 100 ma, and if the Axim uses 200 ma, then every hour we use it on the cable the battery will go down by 100ma/hour of power. Eventually it will die from battery rundown. So, rather than offer charging through USB and have people complain when the low power USB ports fail, Dell chose not to offer a charge sync cable.
Third party makers, on the other hand, can offer charge/sync cables and then blame Dell when it doesn't work.
Now if you use the cable to charge the Dell when you are NOT using the Axim, then the 100 ma will eventually charge the battery, although it will be mighty slow.
If you get 500 ma from your USB port, then it may be more practical.
