alternate battery for dell

Has anyone made an adaptor that would allow you to use standard triple A Batteries, or double A Batteries on your dell.

I was thinking of making one, but i'm unsure of why there are 4
contacts on the battery. Anybody got a schematic of the battery.
Are the dell batteries smart, (circuitry inside, or just battery?)

3 1600mAH 1.2 volt batteries, wired in series would be 3.6 volts. Enough to power the dell? (the Dell battery is 3.7 volts 1440mAH)

Alternate Batt

Li-Ion Batt require smart charging system and many use built on the battery smarts, also Li-Ion are charged in four different charging stages, and must be controled to less than 1% of max voltage to prevent damage :

1 Qualification
2 Fast Charge Phase 1, Constant Current to 90% (~2hrs)
3 Fast Charge phase 2, Constant Voltage (~1/2hrs)
4 Maintenance charge

Due to this being built in to the AXIM I would recomend NOT messing with the batt pack but use the pwr connector on the bottom!! to a outside batt with NO higher than 6V. (4 x 1.5Volt D cells)

By the way the best thing to know about Li-Ion is:
100% depth of discharge is about 400 cycles then its toss time.
90% you effectively double the cycle life of the cell.
Discharge profiles of 25% or less extended the cycle life of cells beyond 10,000 cycles!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

Wow, THanks, thats really great info.

Oh, about the charging of the dell battery, so your saying if you use it up to 75% left everytime, and not drain it past 75% the battery would last 10,000 cycles?

Batt Life

That is right..
Each ~10% less depth of discharge (repeated) than 80% basically increases life by ~1/2 the # of cycles the batt will do, thus discharge of 80% about 400 cycles, discharge to 70% 800 cycles, discarge to 60% 1600 cycles.
BUT!!! The typical life span of a Lithium-ion battery is two to three years, whether used or not. High internal resistance will eventually render the battery useless. The energy may still be present but can no longer be delivered. This condition is permanent and cannot be reversed with cycling. Cool storage at a partial state-of-charged (40%) retards the aging process.

Also here is a link for a +20 Hr Power pack pre-built w/recharging ability.

and www.batteryuniversity.com

have very good practical battery knowledge for engineers and users alike. Must read for those who want more from your batteries. Hope info is helpful to all.
