A US customer buying from Europe is throwing his or her money away. The Europeans usually get screwed when it comes to prices so avoid buying products from Europe if you're american and stick to domestic online or brick and mortar stores.

Yep, totally agree.... it's usually pounds for dollars. The Dell is £277 here whereas it can be had for $299 from Dell in the US.

You are quoting US$ prices without their local/state/federal taxes versus UK£ prices inclusive of VAT.
OK, there are price differentials (try, for example, CF and SD prices) but not as great as you imply.
The above, of course, also does not take into consideration the additional charges for mailing US to UK, not to mention possible additional delivery time.

Fair comment, but we can only compare prices published. In many cases general consumer goods manufactured in the Far East etc are also retailed at higher prices in the UK. We have a fixed VAT rate of 17.5% whereas the US Sales tax varies from state to state so it's difficult to use a median.
The general feeling is that prices in the UK are higher than the US but also when compared to Europe. New cars often cost 25%-40% less when purchased in europe even when manufactured in the UK!

OK, let's actually compare prices published, as you suggest but like for like, without additional taxes, delivery and such like, the price for a UK (or Eire) sourced Axim 400MHz is approximately US$20 dollars more than one sourced in the US, hardly a $ / £ swap. To be fair on Dell, this could, ehm, be a bit of a buffer to hedge their bets regarding exchange rates.
This is just a bit off topic but by way of an example, as you cited car prices, I recently took delivery of an MG ZTT which I bought from a dealer in the Netherlands. Your comment regarding up to 40% differentials in prices is not the case. After waiting for months for the car, possibly having to withstand price increases (which did not apply), additional insurance, import duties, VAT, etc, etc not to mention the hassle involved and having to get from Scotland to the Netherlands and then back again, all in all, I reckon the savings to have been in the region of £400 not including my time. The prices I cite are Dutch prices + all the damned taxes versus what I could have screwed out of ther local dealer. To cap it all, new cars in Europe tend to have equipment specifications much less than those in the UK.
I won't, however, argue *too* much regarding the rip-off attitude which exists in the UK but then again, the US is a much larger and more vibrant market and dare I say, they expect and get service which pales to the crap offered in the UK.
There is unfortunately, too much anecdotal evidence chucked around newgroups based on little truth or experience. Because someone says it doesn't necessarily make it so.

Sorry to hear about your wasted effort bringing the new car in, it just goes to show you have to do a lot of homework and a lot of running around and phone calls usually to get any real gains.
But as for the US/UK price differential, its really does exist, US dell site for the 400 model is $299 after $50 rebate that equates to approx £192 before local taxes, which average around 10% depending on state, so say £215 to be safe. Here in the UK the same spec will cost £267.quite a difference, work out the percentage saving you made on your car and then the percentage saving on the US sourced Axim....the US Axim is a bargain :)
But of course then all you have to do is get it shipped for free by a friend who just happens to be coming this way! and whatever you do declare it as a gift to customs!
What ever way you look at it, like for like we really do get screwed here.
Having said that I took delivery of my Axim yesterday, never seen a box so smashed up, but the PPC was fine thankfully and is worth every penny, can't wait now until the end of the month to order the TomTom navigator 2 , thats the reason I went for a PPC.
Best regards David
