depends..... i already have a wireless router for laptop so getting a wireless cf card makes the most sense... wireless routers are getting lower in cost ($50 - 100)... i got the dcf 660w dlink card for $40 ($80, less $40 rebate) from Best Buy .I access a dlink di614+ router ($50) and am very pleased with both.

What do you mean by Wireless? Wireless at Home or Wireless anywhere? Wireless at home get the router. Wireless almost anywhere use a Web enabled digital phone (GSM/GPRS). I have used my cell phone via IrDa port and it is a slow connection but it works any where the phone works. At Starbucks you can use your WiFi (80211.B) card for a fee for Service with Tmobile. Starbucks is prettymuch everywhere and is much faster than Cell phone even if you dial up an ISP instead of Instant GPRS. I hate found that since I meet salesmen at Starbucks anyway, it is much faster for me to get there a little early (15 min.) and check email over a coffee waiting for them. Tmobile has pay-as-you-go, prepaid, and monthly service plans. I do the prepaid thing $20.00 for 120 minutes over 120 days. you can sign up with the Axim & WiFi at Starbucks with a credit card and renew the same way. Pretty painless. I would not pay that to surf, but for an email check will out of the office it's great. Something to do in longer lines for Java!

Regards, B)

I hope the following information may be helpful to you.

I have a cell phone with verizon wireless, however, it is not data compatible.
I have found a verizon wireless data compatible phone (Kyocer 2135) for $29.99.

This phone can be used with the following wireless compact flash data modem. This modem will work with my Axim.
http://www.c-source.com/csource/newsite/tt...?part_no=857519

Additional benefit:
The wireless internet access charges are assessed the same as my "voice minutes". I do NOT have to pay for a special plan to access the internet.

I am not promoting versizon. My wife just happen to choose this plan. I am sure the same type of service is available with the other wireless companies.

Note: Most of the compact flash wireless modems I have reviewed are phone specific. Therefore, make sure the modem works with the phone, the phone works with your wireless service, that your wireless service is not charging an additional fee for internet access (you should be charged just like voice minutes).

If you want higher speed access - you will have to pay an additional monthly fee.

I hope this helps.

so how much for your hardware & services?
And can you take some pictures of the cards & interconnects for those of us who live under a rock?

Mucho gracias.

Here is a link with a lot of info. There are many links available..but this one I found quickly.

http://www.ppcw.net/stories.php?story=01/12/29/7461702

It all depends on what Hardware you decide to go with, but they pretty much all work the same. I am usin a Belkin CF Bluetooth card Model # F8T020 for just under $50.00

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage...%2FBluetooth%2F

and a Nokia Bluetooth capable Phone $179.00 b4 $80.00 rebate

http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/6310i

I am using AT&T GSM/GPRS all Digital Service. I have unlimited nationwide minutes for $99.00 per month and $40.00 per month worth of data 10mb as I recall.

The important part is pairing up both the phone and PDA. you only have to do that once though.

Hope this all helps.

Frankie

I use the Linksys WAP and CF WiFi adapter at home and get a screaming 11MBps. It is a phenomianal way to connect at home, but I have trouble finding access points away from home. (I have only come across one other signal.) I looked into getting a GSM CF card for the Axim, but that cost close to $300 before the monthly service. I am doing some research on the bluetooth alternative. It would be so awesome if I could piggyback an internet connection on my existing cell phone plan. Unfortunately my cell is not bluetooth enabled, I have found out that some bluetooth devices can work with it anyway. If anyone has any experience with this I would love to hear from you. I'll let you all know what I find out.

GSM alone will not cut it.

You need GSM/GPRS (Voice/Data) service. I have finally got Access To corp. email. I am now walking down the street Reading corp. email and surfing the Internet.

Axim X5 300Mhz Belkin Bluetooth CF Card to Nokia 6310i Phone ATTW GSM/GPRS service w/Data Service.

AND my monthly cell bill went down about $50.00 per month. Pays for the new Phone in 4 months. Previously had ATTW TDMA service. No more analog Service, But it always cuts out there anyway.

This is not dial up. It is Instant on. (3-4 seconds to the net...for the bluetooth to connect)

BTW:

I can talk on the phone while walking down the street surfing or reading email. Nice Plus.

Regards,

Frankie

In my research for wireless solutions for the Axim I found a company, Socket Communications, that manufactures digital phone cards (a CF card with a cable that attaches to a wireless phone) for many of the most popular phones in use. I have just ordered a DPC to connect with my older model Nokia phone, but haven't gotten it, so I can't vouch yet for how well it works, but the basic concept is that it uses your phone as a modem to dial up your ISP, and the connection time comes out of your allotted monthly minutes. The only catch being that you must be subscribed to data services with your phone carrier. It seems like a fairly simple, albeit slower method to get mobile internet access without having to be in proximity of a bluetooth access point, especially if you use an older model phone. Socket's website lists connection speed at up to 115 Kbps, of course actual speed is determined by the phone carrier, and will likely be much slower. Anyway, it might be a solution for some people. I will follow up with a post after I get the DPC and let everyone know how it works.

I got the Dlink DCF-660W from Best Buy today - there's a $40 rebate currently and it works like a charm so far (except network Activesync but that's something with Activesync and different subnets that I haven't figured out yet, not the card itself). Very good signal strength, 128-bit WEP enabled, not a problem. Only gripe the antenna blocks the IR somewhat - I can still get an angle to IR to my PC though (again, once I figure out network ActiveSync, no need for the IR anyways).

I'm still waiting for my new cellphone to arrive so I can test out Bluetooth to T-Mobile's GPRS service... I bought the Socket Bluetooth card, which is kinda pricey though... but has a laptop PCMCIA adapter so its dual use.
