I had read some talk (here?) about the potential for Dell to incorporate a micro drive into a future Axim pocket PC. Maybe the 10GB micro drive from Hitachi due out in the second half of this year could be a candidate. Especially since the 10GB Hitachi is expected to have a 40% improvement in power consumption and a 100% improvement in operating shock over existing product.
If not I wouldn't mind having a compact flash version!
The concept of internal microdrive would be really nice, but why?
If they include a CF slot, you can buy your own and plug it in. The only disadvantage I forsee is loosing bulk discounts and blending into the case.
Most of the hard disk based MP3/Video players available now, with color screens, have battery life of 4+ hours. Granted they are a bit thicker and heavier than a X50 I would think they can make a PDA with a built in micro drive that would have 4+ hours of battery life. Especially with the soon to be released new micro drives which supposedly use less power.
The usage pattern would be different though I would imagine. Listening to music the device can spin up the disk, cache a bunch of data and turn it off again until it's needed. That's what the HDD based audio players do. On a PDA it's more likely to be random access which means more spinning and more battery drain.
Sure the technology is getting better, but I'm not sure I'd want to sacrifice battery life just yet.

I haven't used an X50v...but I have used the X3 and X30, and thought the batteries were too weak. The X5 has a pretty good battery...I wouldn't want anything less. Batteries need a major upgrade in technology.
I refused to get another PDA until the battery can match the PDA's performance...
i would like to see a device that has the standard cf and sd slots on the outside and then you could add a compact flash card or microdrive with a slot under the battery, some what like how some cell phones have there sim cards under the battery. that way if you want a built in microdrive you can add it or add flash memory

I upgraded from an X5 to X50v and have absolutely no regrets. The things I wanted to do I could not do with my X5 (although it was a great PDA). I use an extended battery with my X50v and get 7 hrs battery life during normal operation, and approx. 3.5 hrs battery life when using wifi 100% of the time. These are not guesses, as I use "uptime meter" to monitor battery usage.
I wouldn't let the battery hold you back.
