Does This Exist???

Hi, I am new to this site and am very strongly considering purchasing a Dell Axim x50v.

Here is my question: I was reading that skymall magazine you get on the airplane and came accross a text scanning pen...

http://www.skymall.com/webapp/skysto...earch&iscrssl=

Anyway, has anybody seen anything like this that hooks directly up to the axim's compact flash or SD slots?

Please let me know. Thanks alot.

Got one more for you...

Why is it that on this site and on CNET the x50v got lower review ratings than the regular x50?

Also, does anybody know about any [really great] programs for voice recognition of personal memos or even possibly for buisness meetings or college classes, that can be used on the axim.

Thanks again everyone for your time and responses.

I always thought it was something to do with the x50 being cheaper and there for better for a budget spender and buisnessmen :approve:

Probably because its (arguably) slower, more expensive, and compatible with less apps, games.

I had a siemens pen reader a few years ago that conected via a serial port... But doesn't the review you mentioned say that it will send via infra red? That would sound like a better option to me (1 less set of cables to carry around)

If you didn't want to use IR, you could connect it to the Axim by USB, with the Ratoc USB 1.1 CompactFlash card.

Try Microsoft Voice Command, includes microphone if you buy full version. Trial version lasts one month, full features.

That page shows an Axim x5 on the picture in the middle, so I would think it would work with current Axims.

One of my coworkers has one of those pens that is a couple of years old. She couldn't get that one to work on images on a microfilm reader. I'll have her try it on her IPAQ at home and let me know.

Well, if the documents you review are not already available on line or can not be scanned into a Word or Adobe document, this item may be handy.

Doing a quick www.google.com serach and then lead me to www.nextag.com and www.amazon.com I found this device for $75 a big 50% less than SkyMall.

Skymall has interesting stuff but you do pay full retail

Flintlock:

Yea man, thanks for the advice. Personally, I actually abhor skymall's prices and never shop there. (I generally stick w/Froogle, Pricewatch, or ebay stores.) I was just using it as an example as I knew where to find the item. But thanks for the advice. I too would hate to see someone BLOW their $ at a place like skymall.

Talked to my coworker just now. Hers is so old she had to buy an adapter to make it work with a modern computer, and it never really worked well after that...junk now. She liked it well enough back then that she is interested in a newer model, but not from one of those pricey places.

Ooooo! I was eyeing one of those pen thingys as well. I'm a grad student and am reading wayyyy too many books all at once. It would be great to have my highlighted stuff ready for a quick read while on the road (via my X30h) instead of lugging three or four books around all the time. Let me know if you end up buying this gizmo, and if it'll work with an X30h!
