Question Network Card - Which one should I go with? HELP PLEASE

Hi everyone,

Well, I'm trying to get settled in with my AXIM. First of all I have to say I love it, I can't go no where with out it lol.

Well, going back to my question.

I'm thinking about buying a network card "WIRELESS" of course. I would like to get something that fits the following needs.

1) Compatible with my LINKSYS "BEFW11S4" Wireless Router with 4 Port Switch.

2) Easy on battery life. I know the AXIM is very nice with battery life time, atleast mine is, and I like that option, so I want something with low power consumption, yet get performance.

3) Range - I'm not sure what ranges these Wireless CF Cards can get or signal strength I should say, but if you do suggest one, please give an idea on range approximately and performance.

4) Configuration - Something not hard to configure would be nice as well. I'm running Windows XP on all my 3 systems at home within the network.

I also have a seperate question. I'm still new to the PocketPC so I'm kind of full with questions, yet I appreciate everyone's time and participation in helping me get further involved with pocketpc's.

QUESTION: What is better in reference to storage? A CF Memory Card or a SD Card?

I have been told that CF Memory cards will be disappearing from the market, whether its true or not I dont know. My digital camera uses CF, so i hope not. But anyways.... I store alot of information on my memory card which is gonna suck when I use LAN WIRELESS CF Card to transfer files from main computer to my pocketpc, so I understand the advantage of SD in that area. What else is DIFFERENT between CF and SD? I ready something about Security issue but i'm still lost.

THANK YOU AGAIN TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR REPLYS.

Thanks

Well, there's been talk of SD form factor 802.11b cards coming out, but I should think that they'll be quite pricy and also stick out of the side of the unit. They seem to be aimed at Palm users, since they don't have CF slots.

My friend has tried a Linksys 802.11b card and the reception was poor with the matching Linksys base station, although I think that it could be that the base station is low powered since the PCMCIA linksys card had even worse reception.

We got about 100 metres outdoor (across the car park and into the other company building) and 30 metres indoor (but that's in a lab building with loads of walls in between and computer hardware everywhere). I wasn't greatly impressed with the reception, but the card was easy to install and the drivers were good. Didn't look too great in the Axim because of the rounded top on the Axim it's a squat thing sat on the top. You could get at the earphone jack though and it's a cheap card (in the UK).

I'm still shopping for an 802.11b card, but I've put an order in for a 256MB SD card (£50.50) which I'm getting shipped over from Australia, but it hasn't arrived yet due to problems with the payment solutions provider (erm - I forgot my password). Like you, I think there's no point having an 802.11b card if you can't store what you download anywhere!

Elsewhere on the forum some people are quoting problems with large capactity memory cards, so you might want to catch back up on that thread...

Good luck and please post back when you've finished your shopping!

Check this for comparison of WiFi cards. Also you might want to post wireless questions in that particular forum:
