Axim has a nice design; imho the new hp handhelds are ill-proportioned and funny looking.

Really, the number of bugs frequently get exaggerated because people who have had a bad experience tend to complain about it loudly, whereas people who've had good experiences have no such motivation to talk. My experience with my X51v has been bug-free, as I suspect have been many others, and I've never even gotten around to upgrading it to the A12 ROM which is supposed to improve performance and eliminate many bugs.

me want vga
p.s. people find Aximsite and ask around/complain when they have problems. That's what this site is set up to do; help with problems. I do see a lot of posts thanking Aximsite members, and like Adamadbrown above, stating zero problems. So, you will see more complaints, because, really, that's why we're here, as a mutual support forum.
As for my Ax, the X50/510 WM03se model has seen zero problems and I use it every day. I especially love the WiFi capabilities.

I've got an hx2490 as a backup... and it has its quirks. WiFi can be a bit spotty, and I've had the driver spontaneously unload and stop working. The Axim has its own quirks (for example, with A12 and no Widcomm stack, I had it lock up playing music in PocketPlayer while using BT headphones)... well, they're different, and each have their own quirks.
Personally, I like the way the hx2000 series comes with a full-face shield, which lets you see the PDA when a notification goes off, without having to flip open a carrying case. However, the Axim's just dead-sexy. ;)

Im agree,
X50v/X51v has better VGA acceleration and optimal core,
exampe for playing hires divx movies, the 2790 require full speed (624Mhz) for smooth playback. Thanks to the 2700 GPU while x51v can play it at powersave mode :approve:

The battery is under-powered (1100 mAH @ 4.2V), and the device is too warm almost all the time (heat = power used). The VGA screen is great but the color is washed out (not good) compared to a good QVGA (or the 4700's VGA). VGA is also a lot slower than any QVGA I've used (very slow scrolling lists, for example). For clarity, one can get by fine on QVGA with ClearType fonts. The Axim VGA is good for the price, but w/o the VGA it has very little going for it, at least when compared to others out there. This matches my belief that Dell sells very few QVGA Axims. Would you have bought it otherwise, without the VGA?

Half year ago I would recommend the X51V. but now I have to think again and pick HX2795 instead.

I wish HP still made the HX4705 but with WM5. That would have made my decision a lot harder when I got my x51v. I love my axim! One of my friends has the hx 2795B and it is pretty nice. I can't stand the qvga screen though. VGA is AWESOME. It is a world of difference to me. If you haven't made a decision yet, I would recommend comparing the two up close. You can do a search for a Dell kiosk in your area maybe. That is what I did and it closed the deal for me.

I have a HP iPAQ hx2495 Pocket PC and I have to say that I love it even though it doesnt have a VGA screen. It will run games like pocket Hexen and pocket quake flawlessly as well as all my other apps and the wifi is nice and fast. It has the 520mhz proc instead of the 624mhz one but 520 is more then fast enough for me. I have a 1gb SD card for storage. It is more then acceptable, I managed to encode Night of the Living Dead, the 1990 remake and put it on the card. It only took up 150mb on it. Also put on some episodes of Drawn Together and The Simpsons. All the video runs flawlessly.
In the framerate department all the pocket games based on the Doom engine run at way over the 30fps point. As for Pocket Quake it seems to run at 20-25 fps. Havent tried Pcoket Quake 2 or 3 because I cant imagine it being playable considering the more advanced particle effects and the fact that both games feature more detailed textures especially Pocket Quake 3.
For office apps it also seems to work exceptionally well, It will download my email from my gmail account without a problem. all of my Excel and word documents are also stored on the SD card and work flawlessly with no formatting problems. Internet browsing is very smooth even when there is large pictures on the page.
As far as problems go the fact that it runs Windows Mobile 5.0 means that some software is incompatible. I learned that the hard way, especially when I tried to run Pocket Wolfenstein and it gave me a white screen. Doom4CE would just crash back to the desktop but according to the memory tab in settings under the running programs tab it would still be running sucking up memory. Also it came preloaded with some today screen plugins that I could have done without.
I give my PPC a 9.5 out of 10

I've got a 2490 here that's given me some issues... mostly with regards to WiFi unloading spontaneously. Personally, I'd have a tough time going back after the combination of 624MHz and VGA screens...

Ive never had a Problem with my wifi unloading, allthough I did have a problem syncing the device with Activesync 4.1. I updated to activesync 4.5 beta 2 and have had no problems yet.

WiFi occasionally won't load without a soft reset, and I've had BT come out and say there wasnt' enough driver memory when I left it to shut off by itself with the BT on. I'd been playing music before, then stopped the music and let it power-off by itself while handling other things. When I started the HP back up, it wouldn't turn the BT driver stack back on, saying it was out of driver memory.

I am replying late, but hope others could use the info.
I ordered my X51v from them last Friday - $50 less than it would've cost me at Dell, even with Dell's 25% discount and free shipping. Item arrived on Wednesday, that's OK for ground shipping. As advertized, a new unit in what looks like factory packaging (a brown box with Dell logo). Overall a good experience. :approve:
