Better non-phone than X51v? Need advice!

I will be able to buy a new Pocket PC in the next week or two. Money is less of an issue than ability. I've had an HP430; Axim X5; and currently have an Axim X51. I definitely want to upgrade to VGA so I am thinking an X51v. However, I realize that I don't really know of other options out there and am now wondering what they might be?

Can you help? What are great devices I can look at? I do NOT want a phone, I want a Pocket PC only. VGA screen (or better if it exists?). Lots of internal memory for running programs; 2 or more external card slots; fast speed (fastest?); latest Windows Mobile OS; etc.

I am looking for best features and stability. I have seen the X51v and know it fits my 'criteria'. But is there something better now?

Thanks for your help! I am 'chompin at the bit' to upgrade... :)

Chris

the pocket loox range would be the obvious competitor to the the x51v, although depending on where you are in the world then they might be hard to get hold of.

If you're a linux fan then a zarus, or nokia770 might also be worth a look.

The search for the perfect PDA is pretty hard as no such thing exists. There's only what's best for you. If I was buying now then the X51v would certainly be on my list of candidates. I'm tempted by some of the phone devices.. but the VGA screen/Dual slots for memory and VGA out make my x50v the best for me

The HP 4700 is the only other readily available VGA device here in the US. It feels much larger in the hand than the x51v and it has it's own fans and detractors. I personally bought the x51v last week after my x50v died. I can't live without VGA!

OK this is good and I appreciate your thoughtful replies very much! I'll look at those as I didn't really know of each of them. Thanks!

I have been going through the same thing - just purchased the x51v last week, & love this thing. My top-2 were the [mentioned above] iPAQ4700 & x51v. I was biased by the HP & owned one since 200lx. My list:
- 4700 feels bigger & heavier
- x51v has 2x flash (that's a biggy)
- 4700 has better factory battery life (x51v hi-cap batteries are cheap)
- you'll pay a premium for the 4700 that I don't think is worth it (same features)
- the x51v could be bigger (pocket size not my bag, I'd rather have 4+" vga).
- this forum has sooo much info for new axim users - an incredible resource

Just my 2 cents - steve

Only comment I can contribute is that the HP4700 is discontinued. No longer available in the UK, and I presume the same for the US but I'm sure others will comment. Natively it comes with 2003SE I think.

Excellent. I am gonna stay with an Axim and get the X51v. The others mentioned don't sway me too much I guess, or I am creature of habit. But VGA and dual memory card slots is very important for me.

Now, time to go find a good coupon. hehe :)

Thanks everyone! I love Aximsite! Woot!

The X51V looks like it has the best combination of features and price, and is still available new. I've been tempted by the HP hx4700 but it is a bit larger than the X51V. From reading on the net it seems that there are a lot more reliability issues with the X51V, but I can't tell what percentage of users have problems. There seem to be a lot of problems but also a lot of happy users, so I guess you take your chances. I think if I was buying a new X51V I would get the extended warranty, or I would try to find a used one dirt cheap which is also hard to do. Also you might wait a bit and watch to see if Dell comes up with any short term great deals like they did a couple of weeks ago.

There is a deal I will use coming up Tuesday. Additional 30% off from Dec 12 -16. It stacks with other offers. And is available to the first 2000 people who use the code. I should be able to pull that off. Code: FR35VKB7BRVR9M

I'm going for the whole package, X51v, VGA, GPS, Presentation bundle, etc. I can't wait! /gulp!

Oh? Well, darn. the post on a coupon forum was dated yesterday. Those meanies, LOL. Anyway, it didn't matter. I ordered it yesterday (Friday) because I did the math and the 15% discount on the Axim along with the 15% on accessories, along with a mailed coupon I had here was perhaps even or $10 bucks better. I got the X51v with the presentation bundle and added on a Bluetooth GPS. Supposed to ship Tuesday - woot!

Sorry about the bad coupon code tho. I know what its like to get your hopes up and it turns up bogus. I apologize...

Fine with me, though you caught me shopping around as well. ;-)

Ended up getting one w/10 months warranty left, extended battery and 4gb SD card for $280... a fine price all things considered...

That is pretty sweet deal - especially with the 4GB thrown in. Good job!

Funny. I've been thinking about pgrading my x30H to something new but don't know what. I've thought about a converged device but don't want a smartphone, would rather have a PPC phone ed. That leaves me the PPC 6700 in Canada as my only true choice but I've seen nothing but mixed reviews of it and the 6800 is almost out in the US. Takes me back to an Axim, and the question then arises do I upgrade to an X51v?
