What Should I buy?

I am planning a 3 week trip to Europe this fall. I have been looking at the Axims since the x3 series. I would like to use it mainly for gps (language barrier is bad enough, dont want to get lost also), and microsoft money 2006, email, as well as some web browsing. My delima is do I buy one now for $375, though Dell has stopped making them, do I wait for the Averatec UMPC to become available http://www.averatec.co.uk/, or get a 10"-12" laptop. I like the axim for its small size and it will be easy to cary and use often without putting a sign on my chest that says "Mug me". The UMPC has the same benefits that the axim has, but I can do photo editing and better web surfing with it, as well as watch more movies and mp3s (disk space vs cf/sd card). The laptop will be a pain to take around, but will have a better screen size and possible price than the umpc. I have a great desktop and dont need a "full powered laptop", just need something for the remote mundane tasks durning the trip and when I get back.
Your suggestions are welcome.

Well, if you want to travel by car or hitchhike then a pda will be a good choice - GPS wise.
But in view of the uncertainty that's obvious in both of your posts I doubt that you can make up your mind :p

BTW: Welcome to the AximSite - anyway

If you're anything like me you think that you will need a full-featured computer when you're away on a trip but then you realize that full-featured laptop (or even UMPC) is a pain in the arse to carry around with all the other junk you have. With that in mind might I suggest that you just stick with the PDA, eh? I've discovered that my X50 turns out to be more than plenty for anything I need to do when I'm away from my "big" machines. It has enough "stuff" on it to do something if I'm bored (like play Virtual Pool or read) but I can just throw it in my bag and be off without worrying about hauling a lot of crap around.

The main thing I do is make sure I've got a spare battery or two and a charger - then I'm all set for the trip.

I used to haul my laptop around with me thinking that I "might" need it. Turns out I really didn't. The only exception to that was a long trip out west we took last fall - I needed the hard drive space to dump my camera to; however even there if I'd thought ahead I could have gotten a couple more CF cards for the camera and that would have sufficed.

HTH,
