Need help on choosing a SD card
Hi...
I'm planning to buy a SD card for my Ipaq 2215.
I would like a 512 MB card, I've seen some sites, and the cheapest I found was the SanDisk Card at $159.00.

Does anyone know of any problem of this card with Ipaqs? I ask this because Ive seen some posts on aximsite of Axim Users talking about problems with these cards...

Any advice on a SD card?
Thanks for the help...

I have been using the San Disk 512 SD cards with a 2215 and 5555 for several months without any problems. I mainly use it for TomTom GPS maps. I have not had any problems with them. As they come formatted FAT 16 I did reformat them to FAT 32 to help speed up access time. If you are changing data frequently you will want to keep them defragged.

Well, I did have one problem with my SD card. I didn't realize how much memory I had left when I tried to install a game. I didn't have enough memory and my card got wiped. But that probably is not a SanDisk specific problem. Man, I gotta get a 512 MB sd card.

Many people in oher forums (Brighthand, PocketPCThoughts) have reported problems with the SanDisk SD cards. Check out the Kingston SDs at various sites like ecost. With a rebate it's as cheap as the SanDisk. I've used Kingston memory for years and have had no problems whatsoever. 5 year warranty also!

What do you think about Lexar's SD card?

Sandisk cards are slow as heck. Card operations that would take 15 minutes on a 256MB Sandisk takes less than 5 on a 256 Lexar card.

I never had any trouble with a Sandisk card but the speed difference between the lexar and Sandisk is like night and day.

Spend the extra money and get either a Lexar or Panasonic card. You won't regret it.

Personally, I would go for a SimpleTech SD card. Their cards are Hitachi-made Japanese cards and have a good warranty, unlike:

Panasonic - good cards, only a 90 day warranty...
Lexar - have sourced SD cards from Sandisk and could do again
Kingston - Like Lexar will source from whoever
Sandisk - They keep playing around with the SD card controller to make it work in all devices. In cheaper devices the card won't work, in more expensive it just goes slowly.

Having a problem and dealing with a slow card are two different things.

Like I said before, I never had a problem with a SanDisk card but the speed of those cards were atrocious.

Does anyone that owns other brands like Kingston or Simpletech have a comparison with regards to speed to other cards?

Yep, I've got loads of Sandisk cards with manufacture dates from 0206 to 0310. The older R series cards (up to 0307) are about 65% of Panasonic / SimpleTech speeds, the newer N series (0307 onwards) are slightly faster at 70% (ish) ...

I've got 6 Simpletech cards (4 x 128, 2 x 256), 5 Panasonic's (1 x 128, 3 x 256 and the 512mb in my 2210 at the moment) and lots of brands inbetween.

Info about Ipaqs and SD cards will hit my little website soon... I've got people with 3970's and 5550's to test cards for me...

To clarify when I said problems, I meant that unlike the fiasco that happened with a batch of Sandisk cards a few months back where their cards where dying out or reformatting themselves. The Simpletech cards never gave me any performance problems, I have a total of 3, 512MB SD cards and have stored apps, video, music and more on them and their performance is still excellent.

If you know a way to test for speeds, I will be glad to run those test on my cards.
