Lexar 128MB SD vs Lexar 32x 256MB SD
My first experiences with SD cards were not good. 3 Scamdisk 128MB Cards all failed and I ended up with a Lexar 128MB SD card. I actually had so many problems with the Scamdisk cards I came up with a "technique" for proving the failure. Effectively I had a bunch of data on the card and I was using WMP to play some audio, Pocket TV to play some video, I had Explorer copying a bunch of files on and off via wifi and I was reading a PDF document (reader software and document both from card).

Doing so much to the card I could make the Scamdisk cards fail within an hour or two, if not sooner.

Once I bought the Lexar I ran the tests for >9 hours on there with no failures. And it hasn't missed a beat yet since.

I also took the opportunity to benchmark the Lexar card vs the Sandisk card. Not only was it capable of acutally KEEPING my data, it was significantly faster than the Scamdisk card.

So needing more capacity, I indulged in a Lexar 256MB 32x SD card. These cards are capable of (in theory) 4.8MB per second. That's 38.4Mb/s. That's a pretty decent speed IMHO.

So I decided that I would benchmark it against my already speedy 128MB Lexar SD Card.

5286ms 5280ms 2411ms 2571ms Write 1MB file
904ms 904ms 918ms 919ms Read 1MB file
1371ms 1355ms 939ms 988ms Copy 1MB file to storage
1550ms 1556ms 1553ms 1554ms Copy 1MB file from storage
11506ms 11483ms 5413ms 6128ms Write 10KB x 100 files
1181ms 1068ms 1077ms 1201ms Read 10KB x 100 files
8753ms 8931ms 5190ms 5348ms Copy 10KB x 100 files to storage
2153ms 2161ms 2160ms 2160ms Copy 10KB x 100 files from storage
150ms 150ms 148ms 149ms Directory list of 2000 files
128MB 128MB 256MB 256MB.

So overall the 256MB card is 30% faster. Based purely on the Write 1MB and Write 10KB tests the card is clearly twice as fast. Or at least the 4150 is able to push it twice as hard.

So there is the decent difference between the speed of the Lexar 128MB card and the 256MB 32x card. This card is marketed towards the digital camera market, which might be the reason why there is a significant increase in write speed but read is pretty similar. A potential bottleneck on digital cameras is flushing the memory to storage to take more pictures. Or maybe it's just some other limitation.

If someone else has SPB Benchmark and a "normal" 256MB Lexar SD, an Ipaq 4150 and feels like running the test please do so... In fact if you have a 4150 why not benchmark ANY of your cards and let's look at the results.

Both Lexar cards come from Japan.

And FYI the difference in price between the 256MB 32x Lexar card and the normal 256MB card was CAD$10.

I had a 32x Lexar 256MB CompactFlash Card for my Jornada 568 a while ago and it worked flawlessly for my trip to Greece last summer. Lexar = good, ScamDisk = Lets just say "not so good".

sKiBa, if you could that would be fantastic. I'd love to see the results.

Me too! I always found my Lexar CF to be very speedy, I would love to see how the SD shapes up in comparison.

I also got hold of a Sandisk 256MB SD card.

7629ms 2571ms Write 1MB file
1000ms 919ms Read 1MB file
2472ms 988ms Copy 1MB file to storage
1571ms 1554ms Copy 1MB file from storage
32453ms 6128ms Write 10KB x 100 files
1198ms 1201ms Read 10KB x 100 files
36280ms 5348ms Copy 10KB x 100 files to storage
2259ms 2160ms Copy 10KB x 100 files from storage
152ms 149ms Directory list of 2000 files

256MB Sandisk 256MB 32x Lexar

Reads are simliar but writes are WAY slower on the Scamdisk. Slower than the Lexar 256MB 32x and slower than the 128MB Lexar.

I believe that is because SanDisk cards write speed is only 12x as oppsed to 32x.

The Lexar 128MB was not 32x and was still faster. I think it's just because Scamdisk cards suck

Oh, sorry for the mix up. Either way, I think people are starting to join forums and realize that SanDisk sucks. From now on, they won't have a market for good flash cards, they will just develop new media.
